Dirtbags Fall to Xavier, 2-1, in 11 Innings

3/8/2020 5:39:00 PM | Baseball

No. 17 Long Beach State had a quiet night at the plate, positing just six hits in a 2-1 loss to visiting Xavier in 11 innings. Freshman Luis Ramirez went a career-best 8.0 innings with eight strikeouts, but the Dirtbags were unable to get the offense going in the series finale.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The offensive woes continued for No. 17 Long Beach State (10-5) in Sunday's series finale with Xavier (5-9), as the Dirtbags scored just one run on six hits in a 2-1 loss in 11 innings at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field. LBSU stranded 10 men on base, and failed to score over the final eight innings of the game to drop the finale. The Dirtbags already clinched a series win over the Musketeers, but just missed out on a sweep. Long Beach State is now 1-1 in extra-inning games this season.

Freshman Luis Ramirez did a nice job keeping the Dirtbags in the game, pushing through a career-high 8.0 innings with eight strikeouts. He allowed one run, scattering five hits and three walks, and benefitting from three double plays turned behind him. Freshman Devereaux Harrison worked the final three innings, piling up five strikeouts, but he was burned by a solo home run in the 11th and suffered his first loss.

LBSU took the lead in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single by Tyler Porter with the bases loaded. That scored Connor Kokx from third while Leonard Jones was thrown out at the plate on the play. Xavier answered in the next half-inning thanks to a leadoff triple followed by an RBI single.

From there, the teams went scoreless until the 11th when Garrett Schultz hit what proved to be the game-winning home run for the Musketeers. Sunday was the first time all season the Dirtbags lost a game after scoring the first run. LBSU is now 8-1 when scoring first this year.

There's no midweek game for the Dirtbags this week, and they'll be on the road the next two weekend. Long Beach State's first weekend road trip is a big one, heading to New Orleans to take on the 13-2 Tulane Green Wave.
