LONG BEACH, Calif. – National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) announced Tuesday afternoon that Nichole Fry has signed a contract and will be added to the roster for the league's latest affiliate franchise in Los Angeles, the California Commotion.
A star shortstop for four seasons at Long Beach State, Fry becomes the first Long Beach State softball player to join NPF and sign a domestic professional contract.
"I'm so thankful to have the opportunity to continue to grow and learn from amazing coaches and outstanding players," Fry said. "It's crazy to just take a step back and look how blessed I am to play the game I love, professionally for my home state. I look forward to playing for the Commotion, to represent this sport, girls and women, and California."
Fry becomes the 15th player signed by National Pro Fastpitch's newest affiliate team, California Commotion.
"We are thrilled to have Nichole join our team," commented Commotion General Manager, Deb Hartwig. "She is an excellent defensive player, which is represented by being honored collegiately while at Long Beach as the Defensive Player of the Year. She will be a great addition to our roster."
An outstanding defensive shortstop, Fry was a four-year starter an anchor at the top of the lineup, finishing her career as Long Beach State's career runs scored leader while also ranking in the Top 10 in doubles, triples, hits, home runs and RBI while finishing as the program's 11th career .300 hitter. She was a two-time first-team All-Big West selection, and is the reigning Big West Defensive Player of the Year.
Fry's signing also marks the 10th team domestic sport that has seen an LBSU player go pro, joining Baseball, Men's and Women's Basketball, Men's and Women's Volleyball, Women's Soccer, Men's Golf, and Men's and Women's Beach Volleyball.
