The Beach battled the host Rainbow Wahine and Mother Nature on Saturday in Honolulu, suffering a 4-3 loss in rainy conditions. The Beach got singles wins from Wiktoria Rutkowska and Zara Lennon while also sweeping doubles play.
HONOLULU – Playing through multiple rain storms throughout the day, Long Beach State (6-3, 2-1 Big West) came up on the short end of a 4-3 score line against hosts Hawai'i (4-5, 2-0 Big West) on Saturday afternoon.
"This was a tough conference loss in difficult conditions," admitted Beach head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. "I was very proud of our fight, and we had some opportunities. We learned from today and we will be a better team for it."
Due to the weather delays, the teams again played singles first. Sophomore Wiktoria Rutkowska got the Beach on the board first with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles.
After Hawai'i stormed back with three straight doubles wins for a 3-1 lead, Zara Lennon battled for a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory at the No. 5 spot to bring the Beach back within one. UH was able to clinch the fourth point with a 7-6 (9), 3-6, 6-3 win at No. 6, securing a narrow win for the Rainbow Wahine.
The teams were able to get doubles matches in, with the Beach earning three victories in pairs play. Natalia Munoz partnered with Lennon for a 6-1 win at No. 1, Rutkowska and Emma Bardet were 6-4 winners at No. 2, and Sadaf Sadeghvaziri and Lalita Devarakonda picked up a 6-1 win at the third spot.
LBSU returns home next week and will host LMU on Thursday at 2 p.m., followed by another Big West match against Cal State Fullerton on Friday at 2 p.m.
