Seminaris Tosses Gem as Dirtbags One-Hit No. 6 Mississippi State

2/28/2020 11:01:00 PM | Baseball

No. 25 Long Beach State continues to play impressive baseball, taking it to a new level with a 4-0 shutout over No. 6 Mississippi State on Friday night. Junior Adam Seminaris was lights out against the Bulldogs, racking up 10 strikeouts in eight innings while allowing just one hit and a pair of walks.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The best story of the 2020 college baseball season added another impressive chapter on Friday night, as No. 25 Long Beach State (7-2) earned a 4-0 win over No. 6 Mississippi State (6-3), holding the vaunted Bulldogs to just one hit on the night. Junior Adam Seminaris was outstanding on the mound, striking out 10 over eight dominant innings.

At one stretch, Seminaris retired 14 MSU batters in a row, ranging from a first-inning walk to a leadoff single in the sixth. That single was the only base hit for the Bulldogs all night, and it produced their only rally. After a one-out walk, Seminaris had to face the No. 2 and 3 hitters in the Mississippi State lineup, Jordan Westburg and Tanner Allen. The southpaw was able to bear down and get a fly ball and a groundout to escape trouble and keep the visitors off the board.

Seminaris then seemed to get stronger as he finished off his outing, striking out the side in the eighth to finish with 10 punchouts on the evening. That's now the fourth time in nine games the Dirtbags have had their starting pitcher reach double-digit strikeouts.
The offense gave Seminaris some early run support, breaking through in the bottom of the first. Calvin Estrada started the rally with an infield single into the defensive shift, then Connor Kokx ripped a one-out single into left. With two outs, Aidan Malm came up with a huge clutch hit, smacking one right back up the middle for a two-run single. Kokx and Malm each had two hits on the night to lead the attack.
Both pitchers then settled in as there were no baserunners in innings 2-5. But Long Beach State was able to double its lead in the seventh. Malm got things going with a single, then pinch runner Alex Pimentel was brought home on an RBI double from Tyler Porter. The sophomore infielder then made his own offense with a steal of third. The throw down got away, allowing Porter to race home and make it a 4-0 Dirtbags advantage.
Freshman Devereaux Harrison came in to work the ninth, and despite a leadoff walk was able to close the door with a strikeout to end it.
Long Beach State will look to wrap up a series win on Saturday with sophomore LHP Alfredo Ruiz (2-0, 0.00 ERA) getting the start. He'll be opposed by LHP Christian MacLeod (2-0, 1.80 ERA) for the Bulldogs with a 3 p.m. first pitch. Fans should also be advised that Sunday's game was moved to a 11 a.m. start, instead of the usual 1 p.m.
