Long Beach State Opens 2020 Season with Pair of Wins

LBSU defeats Vanguard and Concordia in season opener on Wednesday
LONG BEACH, Calif.—Long Beach State opened the 2020 campaign with a pair of wins Wednesday at the LBSU Sand Courts. The Beach started the day by defeating Vanguard 5-0 before taking down Concordia 4-1.
Against the Lions (1-5), the No. 4 pairing of graduate student Makenzie Griffin and Freshman Alice Pratesi got the Beach (2-0) on the board first with straight set wins over Eliana Johnson and Karly Canty, 21-7. 21-8. The No. 5 pairing of Emily Mattoon and Jillian Rodriguez followed shortly after defeating the Lions 21-8, 21-7.
Senior Tyler Spriggs and Junior Mari Molina clinched the win with a comfortable 21-15, 21-13 victory over Gabby Morrison and Conley Harris in the No. 1 spot.
The 5-0 win was completed after the No. 2 pairing of Nicci Reinking and Madison Smeathers and the No. 3 pairing of Sydney Stevens and Katie Kennedy defeated the Lions in three sets each.
After defeating Vanguard, the Beach fought the Concordia Eagles (3-1) in a 4-1 contest. The No. 4 pairing of Mattoon and Rodriguez were the first pair to put a number on the board with a 21-5, 21-18 victory. Claire Newlander and Hanna Farnsworth followed with a 21-16, 21-18 win at the No. 5 spot.
Spriggs and Molina continued to impress at the No. 1 position with a 21-12, 21-15 win against Vanessa Bernzen and Ellie Cary, putting the third number on the board to give the Beach the victory.
Stevens and Kennedy also closed out the day 2-0 after defeating the Eagles 21-13, 21-16. Reinking and Smeathers fought hard but fell in the third set 15-17 to Avery Keathley and Hailee Ryan and close out the game 4-1.
The Beach are back in action Saturday morning for a 9 a.m. matchup against Santa Clara at the LBSU Sand Courts.
