Long Beach State fell behind early and didn’t find a solution for senior Alyssa Denham.
TUCSON, Ariz. – Facing No. 4 Arizona on the road for the second time in the Hillenbrand Invitational, Long Beach State was looking for a repeat of yesterday's magic against Oklahoma but fell behind early and never got anything going offensively against Alyssa Denham in a 6-0 loss.
Long Beach State (5-5) came up just short against No. 4 Arizona (9-1) in the first meeting between the teams in Tucson in a 2-1 defeat, but the Wildcats had the edge throughout on Sunday. Denham hit Abby Lockman in the first, one of two baserunners for Long Beach State on the day, but exited the inning and Arizona quickly took the lead.
Back-to-back singles put two runners on for Arizona, and an attempt to cut down the lead runner resulted in an error from Emily Salazar at third base, allowing a first run to come home against Devyn Magnett. A two-run single from Jessie Harper scored two more, and Arizona would plate one more to take a 4-0 lead after one inning.
Kyra Snyder drew a two-out walk in the second inning, but that would be the final base-runner for the Beach, as Denham finished with seven strikeouts and retired the final 16 batters in a row to record a complete-game no-hitter in her third win of the year.
Additional insurance runs came across for Arizona in the fourth and fifth, but on the whole Samantha Fowler had a solid effort in her first appearance of the season, striking out four Wildcats in five innings of relief.
Tournament play continues next week but the Beach continues to move closer to home. Long Beach State will once again participate in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif., playing five more games starting Friday, February 21 against Utah.
