The 2020 Beach won two sets in the best of three at the annual alumni match
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The No. 4 Long Beach State men's volleyball team welcomed more than 30 alumni back to the Walter Pyramid on Sunday afternoon as the 2020 squad downed the Long Beach Legends in a best-of-3 contest as the current Beach won 2-0 [25-20, 25-16].
The 2020 squad sent their starting core of Shane Holdaway, Simon Andersen, Marc Moody, Ethan Siegfried, Carlos Rivera, Spencer Olivier and Mason Briggs up against the top alums as former LBSU players Taylor Crabb (2011-14), Kyle Friend (2008-11), Zach Gates (2015-18), Tyler Kulakowski (2014-15), Connor Olbright (2011-14), Ian Satterfield (2011-14), and Andrew Sato (2013-17) earned the start for the Legends.
It was the first time the Long Beach State Legends had the chance to play on the Taraflex floor which was installed in March 2019. With alumni returning to Long Beach who played from 1978 through 2018, everyone had a chance to enjoy the new court.
The opening set was close to start, but the Beach pulled away late to win, 25-20. The second set saw the 2020 squad take a commanding lead as the Legends fell by a score of 25-16. Despite the losses, many of the Legends proved they still have what it takes to play competitive volleyball against top-competition.
Several of the Long Beach Legends are currently playing or have recently played on the AVP and professionally overseas including Crabb, Friend, Satterfield, Ryan Meehan (2010-12), Srdjan Ndazdin (2009-12), and Chris Seiffert (1997-00).
Among the top alumni who returned to the Beach were former NCAA National Champions Brett Schroder (1989-92), Brett Winslow (1988-91), Matt Butler (2014-18), and Gates, as well as All-Americans Mark Kerins (1987-90), Matt Prosser (1998-01), and Bryce Yould (2014-17).
Following best-of-3 match, the 2020 squad and the Long Beach Legends played two more sets. The Beach took the first set 26-24, and the second set 25-14.
The day was rounded out with an alumni vs. alumni match as the Legends took the court in a single-set which went up to 25.
