LONG BEACH, Calif. –
The No. 4 Long Beach State men's volleyball team notched its highest hitting percentage of the season as the Beach hit .500 (34-4-60) en route to a 3-0 [25-13, 25-15, 25-13] sweep over Westcliff on Friday night at the Walter Pyramid.

The Beach (8-1) were piloted to the impressive attack percentage by junior setter Carlos Rivera and senior setter Gary Trejo as the duo combined for 27 of the team's 31 assists. The pair's solid passing led LBSU to an 88% sideout percentage, while several players contributed on the offensive attack.

Leading the offensive showing against Westcliff (5-4) was junior outside hitter Ryan Poole, who earned his first-career start. Poole finished the match with nine kills on .412 hitting (9-2-17), while adding eight digs, one block, one assist, and one ace.

Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Spencer Olivier posted a .750 attack percentage as he knocked down six kills on eight errorless swings. He also contributed three blocks and two digs.

Defensively, Long Beach State was led at the net by junior middle blocker Gary Adams who posted a career-best four blocks, while adding three kills on as many swings, to go along with one dig.

In the backrow, the Beach got five digs from sophomore Grant Guinasso who saw action at libero for the final three sets.

The all-around team performance for Long Beach State was a dominating one as the Beach never trailed through all three sets. The Beach took a 3-0 lead to start the match as extended that lead to double-digits (20-10) after an ace off the hands of Trejo. From there, the Beach cruised to a 25-13 win in the first set.

The second set was the only frame in which Westcliff did not hit in the negative as the Warriors mustered a .150 attack percentage. However, it was no match for Long Beach State's .600 clip as the Beach slammed 12 kills on 18 swings with just one miscue. The Warriors battled and managed to tie the game five times, but Long Beach State never relinquished the lead as the Beach claimed the second set by 10 (25-15).

LBSU used a .400 attack percentage in the third set and the defense forced the Warriors into a -.333 hitting percentage as the Beach rolled to another 25-13 victory to complete the sweep.

Westcliff's Jacob VanderBeek finished the match with five kills, while Dale Irvin added four. Setter Alan Zelaya dished out 12 assists, but the Warriors hit -.161 on the match.

Long Beach State will face No. 8 UCLA on Saturday, Feb. 29 at 5 p.m. in the Wooden Center on the campus of UCLA.
