Freshman libero Mason Briggs notched a career-high 15 digs in the victory

LOS ANGELES – No. 4 Long Beach State turned in a solid all-around performance on Saturday night inside the Wooden Center as the Beach downed No. 12 UCLA in five sets [25-21, 16-25, 25-17, 25-23, 15-13] behind career-highs by freshman Mason Briggs and sophomore Shane Holdaway.

Briggs led the Beach (9-1) defense with a career-high 15 digs as his solid passing helped keep the Bruins (8-8) off balance. Holdaway also provided a defensive spark with a career-high seven blocks (2 solo blocks, 5 block assists) as he paced Long Beach State to 13.5 total blocks.

LBSU boasted several solid showings at the net as Marc Moody added five blocks, while Ethan Siegfried posted four, and Simon Andersen, Carlos Rivera and Spencer Olivier each tallied three.

Rivera led a balanced offense as he distributed 45 assists leading the Beach to a .417 attack percentage. He was just one dig shy of a double-double as he registered nine digs to compliment a pair of aces.

Siegfried led the offensive attack with 15 kills, and like Rivera, was just one dig away from a double-double. Also recording double-figure kills for Long Beach State were Olivier and Andersen. Olivier also tallied two aces, while senior Gary Trejo also served up an ace in the win.

The Beach got off to a hot start as they hit .353 in the opening set and boasted an impressive 85% sideout percentage. The offense led LBSU with nine kills on 17 swings, and the defense kept the Bruins guessing as UCLA hit a mere .040 in the set. Despite UCLA's woes, the Bruins managed to keep the game close as Long Beach State earned a four-point victory (25-21).

UCLA heated up in the second set and hit .500 to Long Beach State's .333 attack percentage. The Bruins took an early 3-0 lead and never looked back as they cruised to a 25-16 win to even the match at one set apiece.

Long Beach State regained the match lead with a dominating third set victory. The Beach knocked down 13 kill son 21 attempts, while committing just two errors to hit a sizzling .524. The LBSU defense was on point limiting the Bruins to a .091 clip as UCLA struggled with seven miscues to 10 kills. Following a pair of ties, LBSU pulled ahead using a 5-1 run highlighted by the Trejo ace. The Beach went on another run (4-0) to go up 23-16 before securing the victory (25-17) and taking a 2-1 set lead.

The back-and-forth battle between the two teams continued into the fourth set as both teams slammed 19 kills as Long Beach State hit .514 in the frame to UCLA"s .459. The game saw seven ties and two lead changes with the final tie coming late in the set after Olivier evened the score 23-23 on a kill. However, UCLA put the game away on back-to-back kills, winning 25-23, and forcing a fifth and deciding set.

The fifth set began close with three early ties. But it didn't take long for the Beach to go on a 5-1 run to take an 8-4 lead at the switch. UCLA chipped away at LBSU's lead and made it a one-point game (10-9) as the Beach utilized a timeout. Long Beach State came out of the break and pushed it to match point, 14-11, before UCLA made things interesting as the Bruins cut the Beach's lead down to one (14-13) forcing LBSU to call for a timeout. The timeout stopped UCLA's momentum as the Bruins came back out and served it into the net as the Beach took the set and match 15-13.

The Bruins were led by Mads Kyed Jesen who notched a double-double with 26 assists and 14 kills. He also added four blocks, two digs and five service aces. Alex Knight was just one kill short of a double-double as he finished the match with 13 digs and nine kills, while adding two aces, a pair of assists, and one block.

Long Beach State returns home to the Walter Pyramid to host Lindenwood on Friday, March 6 at 7 p.m.
