
Jason Smith Takes Second in High Jump on Day One of UW Invitational

Long Beach State began the indoor track and field season on Friday at the UW Invitational. Senior Jason Smith was a top performer for the Beach, finishing in a tie for second place in the men’s high jump.
SEATTLE – The Beach began the 2020 indoor track and field season on Friday with just a few competitors in action at the UW Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington. Senior Jason Smith had a solid showing in the men's high jump, finishing tied for second in his first of two events at the meet.

Smith's mark of 6-09 is shy of his personal indoor best from a season ago, but still qualifies as a Top 10 mark in Long Beach State history. While Smith tied for second place at the meet, he was the top collegiate finisher in the event. Smith will be back in action in the men's long jump on Saturday.

In the men's heptathlon, Derreck Affor sits in 10th place after four events. His best event was the 60m dash, during which he secured a 7th place finish with a time of 7.20. In the men's 5,000m, Raymon Ornelas ran a time of 14:48.97 to finish in 33rd.

Action concludes on Saturday, with five athletes in action for the Beach. In addition to Smith and Affor, Ricky Villa will run the men's mile and Ryley Fick and Alyssa Allen will compete on the women's side.
