No. 5 Long Beach State Earns 3-1 Victory Over USC

Spencer Olivier recorded a double-double and notched four aces in the Beach victory
LONG BEACH, Calif. – After dropping the opening set, No. 5 Long Beach State bounded back to win the next three and capture a 3-1 [18-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-22] victory over USC on Friday night inside the Walter Pyramid.
With the win, the Beach improve to 4-0 and have now won a program-record 44-straight matches when playing at the Walter Pyramid. LBSU has not lost a home match since 2016. Meanwhile, USC falls to 1-4 on the season.
Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Spencer Olivier led the way for the Beach as he finished the match with a double-double. Olivier tied his career-high with 14 kills and set a new career-best in digs with 14 and aces with four while hitting. 417 on the night.
Junior setter Carlos Rivera once again turned in a solid performance as he paced the Long Beach State offense, while freshman libero Mason Briggs' excellent passing kept the Trojans off balance.
Long Beach State got off to a slow start as the Beach were limited to an .038 attack percentage in the first set, while USC hit .304 en route to winning 25-18.
Down one set to none, the Beach found a way to win as their offense mustered a .103 attack percentage while knocking down nine kills. With the offense struggling to find its groove, the defense stepped up and held the Trojans to a .029 clip as LBSU received stout performances from junior middle blocker Simon Andersen, sophomore middle blocker Shane Holdaway, and junior outside hitter Ethan Siegfried. The trio patrolled the net and racked up the blocks as LBSU took the second set, 25-21.
The Beach really heated up in the third set as they knocked down 14 kills on 24 swings while committing just two attack errors to hit .500. In addition to Olivier's double-figure performance, Siegfried also reached double digits with 10 kills, while Holdaway added seven of his own. Long Beach State controlled the third set and led the entire way as the Beach cruised to a 25-15 victory over the Trojans.
The third set proved to be the turning point for the Beach as LBSU continued to out-hit USC in the fourth set. The Beach used the momentum from their third-set victory to fight off the pesky Trojans and come away with a 25-22 win.
USC was led by Kyle Gear's 16 kills, while Cole Paxson added 14 digs.
Long Beach State will be in action again on Saturday, January 25 when the Beach host No. 8 Pepperdine in a 7:00 p.m. contest at the Walter Pyramid.
