LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 4 Long Beach State turned in a solid team effort in a 3-1 [25-23, 25-28, 22-25, 25-15] victory over No. 9 Pepperdine on Saturday evening at the Walter Pyramid. Three Beach players registered double-doubles and the Beach hit .318 in their fifth win of the year.

In addition to Siegfried's double-double, junior setter Carlos Rivera and redshirt sophomore outside hitter Spencer Olivier also tallied double-doubles in the match.
Rivera piloted the Beach to a solid offensive showing as he distributed 44 assists, while posting 10 digs, two blocks and a pair of kills. Olivier's 13 kills and 10 digs marked his second double-double of the year as he also contributed three blocks and two aces.
Junior Simon Andersen got the start at opposite and knocked down 13 kills to go along with five digs, four blocks, and one assist. He, along with redshirt sophomore middle blocker, Marc Moody, led the Beach at the net with four blocks each as LBSU finished the night with 10.5 total team blocks.
Defensively, Long Beach State was led by freshman libero Mason Briggs who recorded several saves in the back court. His solid defensive skills which culminated in nine digs reenergized the Beach through long rallies and ultimately ended in points for LBSU.
After eight early ties and three lead changes to open the first set, Long Beach State used a 6-1 run highlighted by three straight kills from Siegfried to take a 22-19 lead over Pepperdine. Despite the Waves closing the gap (22-21) and threatening, the Beach led the rest of the way and took the first set, 25-23.
Long Beach State had its highest attack percentage in the second set as the Beach hit .458 (14-3-24) thanks to Rivera's solid passing. The game was close to start, but LBSU pulled away after a triple block by Andersen, Moody and Siegfried gave the Beach a 16-13 edge forcing Pepperdine to call a timeout. Following the break in action, Long Beach State continued to surge ahead as the Beach put the set away, 25-18, on a kill from Andersen.
Leading two sets to none, the Beach fell behind the Waves 6-3. However, Long Beach State battled back in a gritty performance to tie the game four times before Pepperdine took the final lead of the frame, 15-14. The Waves used a 3-0 scoring run to break the 14-14 tie and kept the Beach from closing the gap as Pepperdine hung on for a 25-23 win to force a fourth set.
The Beach came out determined to close out the match in the fourth set. LBSU hit .367 in the game as the Beach connected on 13-of-30 swings with just two errors. Meanwhile, Long Beach State's defense limited Pepperdine to a mere .094 attack percentage. LBSU jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the fourth set and led the entire set as the Beach rolled passed the Waves winning, 25-15.
Pepperdine had three players reach double-figures in Ben Weinberg (14 kills), Jacob Steele (12 kills), and Noah Dyer (11 kills). Libero Diego Perez finished the match with 11 digs, while setter Rob Mullahey dished out 30 assists as the Waves hit .256.
Prior to the match, the 2019 NCAA National Championship banner was hung from the rafters of the Walter Pyramid to commemorate the program's third NCAA Title.
Long Beach State will be back in action next week when the Beach host No. 6 UCLA on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid.
