The Long Beach State women's volleyball team suffered its fifth-straight loss after falling in straight sets to open Big West Conference play at Cal Poly, 3-0 [25-22, 25-23, 25-19], on Tuesday night.

The Beach (3-10, 0-1 Big West) received a strong showing from sophomore outside hitter Kashauna Williams who finished with a team-leading 14 kills on .355 hitting. Katie Kennedy followed suit with her third double-figure kill performance as she knocked down 12.

Cal Poly (8-5, 1-0 Big West) hit .266 in the contest and was led by Maia Dvoracek's 19-kill performance. She finished the match hitting .405, while adding six digs, three aces, and two blocks. Setter Avalon DeNecochea paced the offense with 35 assists, while libero Mika Dickson collected 17 digs.

Defensively for the Beach, senior libero Hailey Harward led the way with 12 digs, while setter Carly Aigner-Swesey, middle YiZhi Xue, and Williams each added five digs in the back row.

The contest was close throughout as the conference foes fought through 18 ties and 10 lead changes over the three-set match.

The first set was a battle. Despite out-hitting Cal Poly in the first set .250 to .219, Long Beach State came up just short, 25-22. Williams was impressive offensively knocking down six kills on 12 errorless swings to hit .500.

The second set was a bac-and-forth affair as well. The two teams found themselves deadlocked at 23-all, but Cal Poly knocked down the next two points to win 25-23 as the Mustangs took a 2-0 set lead over the Beach into the locker room at the break.

Down two sets to none, Long Beach State put up a fight in the third, but the Mustangs hot .306 in the frame and jumped out in front of LBSU. Cal Poly would go on to win the final set by six (25-19) to complete the sweep.

Long Beach State returns home to the Walter Pyramid on Friday, Sept. 27 when the Beach hosts No. 11 Hawaii at 7 p.m.
