Long Beach State Falls in Straight Sets to No. 20 USC at San Diego Invitational

Freshman Katie Kennedy led the Beach with eight kills on .400 hitting in the loss

SAN DIEGO – The Long Beach State women's volleyball team dropped their third-straight match as the Beach suffered a 3-0 [21-25, 11-25, 20-25] sweep to No. 20 USC on Friday evening at the San Diego Invitational.
After dropping the first two sets, the Beach (3-8) came out strong in the third but were unable to overcome a hot-hitting Trojans (6-4) squad. USC hit .410 in the match and posted a .654 attack percentage in the second set, before closing the match with a .458 clip in the third.
Long Beach State, meanwhile, hit .320 in the third to raise its hitting percentage to .208 by the conclusion of the match.
Freshman Katie Kennedy, who got the start at outside hitter, led the Beach with eight kills on a .400 attack percentage. Behind Kennedy, sophomore outside Kashauna Williams tallied seven kills, while senior middle blocker YiZhi Xue added six.
Tia Chavira got the start at setter and finished with 20 assists, five digs, and four kills, while hitting .429 (4-1-7).
Defensively, senior Hailey Harward notched six digs, while Williams posted three blocks at the net.
USC took an early lead to start the match, but Long Beach State kept it close as the Beach evened the score three times in the first set. The Trojans pulled away mid-way through the set after tallying four straight points to go up 18-11. USC closed out the first set on a kill by Khalia Lanier followed by a block by Jasmine Gross and Emilia Weske, 25-21.
The Beach came out flat in the second set, hitting a mere .091 to the Trojans' .684. USC used several scoring runs to take a double-figure lead over Long Beach State before going up two sets to none with a 25-11 win.
Despite being down 0-2, the Beach came out determined in the third set and turned in their best performance of the match. Long Beach State hit .320 and knocked down 12 kills in the frame. LBSU tied the game four times before the Trojans broke the tie. However, the Beach stayed close on the Trojans' heels before USC took the set and match, 25-20.
Lanier led all scorers with 17 kills, while hitting .483. She added five digs, three aces, and a pair of assists. Also reaching double-figures for the Trojans was Weske who finished with 10 to go along with four blocks, three digs, and an ace. USC's setter Raquel Lazaro concluded the match with 38 assists and eight digs, while libero Raegan LeGrand added seven digs.
