The Beach Travel to San Diego for a Trio of Matches

Long Beach State women's volleyball will spend the next three days in San Diego as the Beach take on San Diego State on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. at Peterson Gym, before taking on No. 20 USC on Friday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m., and San Diego on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. at Jenny Craig Pavilion. The three matches in San Diego will close out LBSU's non-conference schedule.

About The Beach
• Long Beach State is 3-6 on the year after having a solid outing last week at the Gator Invitational when the Beach went 1-2 and pushed the host Gators to five sets.
• Kashauna Williams led the Beach last week with back-to-back career-high efforts as she recorded 23 kills against South Florida, before closing out the tournament with 26 at No. 11 Florida en route to being named to the All-Tournament Team.
• Senior libero Hailey Harward moved into sixth place in the Long Beach State career record book as she collected 1,297 career digs to pass Misty May. She is now 39 digs away from moving into the top 5.
• Williams leads the Beach with 4.16 kills per set on .213 hitting. She also adds 0.78 digs and 0.43 blocks per set.
• Setters Tia Chavira and Carly Aigner-Swesey have both seen action on the court this season as Chavira leads the way with 9.69 assists per set, while Aigner-Swesey averages 8.78.
• At the net, Kjersti Norveel and Xue led the way with 1.38 and 0.834blocks per set, respectively.
• Xue has amassed 332 career block assists and sits in ninth in the Long Beach State career record book.
• The Beach were chosen to finish fifth in the Big West Preseason Coaches Poll behind Cal Poly, Hawaii, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Irvine, respectively.

Scouting San Diego State
San Diego State is 6-3 on the season and 1-0 against Big West Teams this year. Last weekend, the Aztecs defeated UC Riverside in four, before taking a four-set win over Eastern Washington and dropping a 3-0 contest to Grand Canyon.

Victoria O'Sullivan is the team's leader on offense with 3.57 kills per set, while hitting .319. Camryn Machado is the team's setter with 10.71 assists er set.

Defensively, SDSU is led by libero Loren Teter's 3.71 digs per set and Lexie Hamrick's 0.94 blocks per set.

Long Beach State owns a 32-27 lead over San Diego State in the all-time series, however, the Aztecs have won the last two meetings as teh Beach are looking for their first win over SDSU since 2001 in which LBSU swept San Diego State at the NCAA Tournament.

Scouting USC
No. 20 USC comes into the San Diego Tournament with a 5-3 record. The Trojans have won their last three contests after having defeated Yale (3-2), Howard (3-0), and Villanova (3-0) last week.

Khalia Lanier leads the team with 4.07 kills per set, while hitting .281. She also contributes 2.14 digs per set. Raquel Lazaro is the Trojans' setter with 10.55 assists per set. She also averages 2.71 digs per set to rank second on the squad behind libero Jenna Adams' 3.13 digs per set. 

The Trojans are solid on blocking defense boasting four players average one or more blocks per set on the year. Leading that quartet is Jasmine Gross with 1.52.

The all-time series between the Beach and the Trojans is tied at 30-30. This will be the first between the two teams since 2007 when USC defeated LBSU in five sets.

Scouting San Diego
San Diego brings a 4-4 record into the tournament and is coming off back-to-back sweeps over Harvard and LaSalle last week. 

Katie Lukes leads the offensive attack with 3.10 kills per set, while hitting .270 on the year. Anna Newsome (8.96 assists per set) and Laura Madill (5.46 assists per set) share setter duties.

At the net, Lauren Turner (1.05 blocks per set) and Megan Jacobsen (1.04 blocks per set) lead the team on blocking defense. 

Long Beach State holds a slight edge in the all-time series as the Beach own a 12-10 record over the Toreros. The two teams will face off for the first time since 2016 when San Diego defeated LBSU in four.

All-Tournament Honors
Allison Martinez and YiZhi Xue were named to the Georgia Tech All-Tournament Team after turning in a pair of stellar performances. Martinez came off the bench to lead the Beach with 4.25 kills per set on .339 hitting, while Xue displayed a solid effort on both sides of the ball finishing the tournament with 3.08 kills per set, 0.83 blocks per set, six aces, and a .455 attack percentage. 

The following weekend Hailey Harward shined on defense as she set a new season-high with 25 digs on two occasions before finishing off the LBSU Mizuno Classic averaging 5.00 digs per set en route to an all-tournament team selection. 

Long Beach State's most recent All-Tournament selection was Kashauna Williams after she set a career-high with 26 kills at No. 11 Florida and finished the Gator Invitational with a total of 62 kills over three matches. 

Can You Dig It?
Hailey Harward has amassed 153 digs this season to average 4.14 digs per set. She moved into sixth place after bringing her career-total to 1,297 surpassing Long Beach legend Misty May. Harward is now 38 digs away from breaking into the top 5.

Block Party
Senior middle blocker YiZhi Xue is in ninth place all-time at the Beach with 332 block assists. She is second on the team with 31 total blocks for an average of 0.84 blocks per set.

Up Next
Long Beach State begins Big West Conference action at Cal Poly on Tuesday, Sept. 24, before hosting Hawaii at the Pyramid on Friday, Sept. 27. Both matches are set for 7 p.m.
