Kashauna Williams led all scorers with 19 kills on .378 hitting in the setback

SAN DIEGO –
The Long Beach State women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 [12-25, 20-25, 25-21, 21-25] contest to San Diego State on Thursday night at Peterson Gym.

The Beach (3-7) dropped the first two sets to the host Aztecs (7-3) and rallied to come from behind and win the third set, before coming up just short in the fourth.

Long Beach State hit .192 in the match, while San Diego State hit .328. The Aztecs led the Beach in all statistical categories except for blocking defense. LBSU held the edge at the net with 9.0 total team blocks to SDSU's 8.0.

Sophomore outside hitter Kashauna Williams led all scorers with 19 kills, while hitting .378 to lead the Beach. Katie Kennedy came off the bench and added nine kills, while YiZhi Xue posted eight on .368 hitting. Xue, along with Kjersti Norveel led the Beach at the net as the duo each posted four blocks.

Setters Tia Chavira and Carly Aigner-Swesey finished with 24 and 19 assists, respectively, while each adding five digs. Hailey Harward, the squad's libero led the back row with nine digs.

The first set started off close, but San Diego State went on a run to break open the game before closing the set on a 10-1 run to win 25-12. The Beach were held to a .000 attack percentage, while the Aztecs hit .435.

San Diego State jumped out in front early in the second set, but Long Beach State strung together six straight points, capped by a Jade Waskom service ace, to even the score at 18-18. However, the Aztecs turned the tables on the Beach and knocked down three-straight points of their own to go back out in front, 21-18, before winning the set, 25-20.

The third set saw the Aztecs take an early lead, but the Beach came back to tie things up at 10-10 on a kill off the hands of Williams. The two teams found themselves deadlocked once again (20-20), but Long Beach State closed out the set on a 5-1 run to win, 25-21, to avoid the sweep.

SDSU out-hit Long Beach State .472 to .273 in the fourth set as the Hannah Turnlund knocked down three straight kills to give the Aztecs a 5-3 lead. From their San Diego State never trailed. The Aztecs led the rest of the way and pushed it to match point, 24-18. However, Long Beach State refused to quit as the Beach made it a three-point game (24-21), before Turnlund ended the set an match with her 17th kill of the night.

Turnlund's 17 kills led the Aztecs as Victoria O'Sullivan (14 kills) and Erin Gillcrist (10 kills) also added double-figures. Setter Camryn Machado paced the SDSU offense with 50 assists, while adding 10 digs on defense for a double-double. She also added six blocks to lead the team along with Lexie Hamrick, who also contributed eight kills.

Long Beach State will take on No. 20 USC in the San Diego Tournament on Friday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m. at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
