BREMERTON, Wash. –
The Long Beach State men's golf team started off the 2019-20 season with a strong showing on the first day of the Husky Invitational. The Beach are shooting 562, 14 strokes under par, and sitting in second place, just eight strokes behind first-place Washington (554). LBSU has two golfers in the top five in freshman Owen Avrit and senior Hunter Epson.

After the first round, the Beach were two strokes behind first place Washington as Avrit and Epson were tied at the top of the leaderboard.

Avrit made his collegiate debut in a big way. The Arroyo Grande, Calif., native shot a 67 (-5) in the first round and followed that up with a 71 (-1) in the second round. In the first round, Avrit recorded five birdies, then posted three in the second round as he owns a score of 138 for six under par.

Epson started off strong with six birdies in the first round as he tied Avrit for the lead with a score of 66 for six under par. However, he dropped four spots after shooting a 73 for one over par in the second round as he was plagued by four bogies, three of which came on the first three holes of the back nine. Despite the setback in the second round, Epson heads into the final 18-holes tied for fifth with a score of 139 for five under par.

Trip Morris, a freshman out of Studio City, Calif., heads into the final round sitting in a tie for 13th-place as he owns a score of 142 for two under par. He had a strong second round notching back-to-back birdies at holes 13 and 14, then again at holes seven and eight on the back nine.

Long Beach State will resume action in the Husky Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 17 as the Beach will tee off at 9:05 a.m.
