Women’s Volleyball Defeats UNC Asheville in Five Sets

Three Beach players recorded double-figure kills in victory

ATLANTA – Behind career performances from Allison Martinez, Kashauna Williams, and YiZhi Xue, Long Beach State picked up its first win of the 2019 season with a 3-2 [22-25, 27-25, 25-12, 20-25, 15-12] victory over UNC Asheville on Saturday morning at the Georgia Tech Tournament.
Martinez came off the bench to lead the Beach (1-1) with a career-best 24-kill effort while hitting .310 in the match. She also added four blocks, three digs, and two aces in an all-around solid performance. Joining Martinez in double-figures with career-numbers of their own were Williams and Xue who posted 18 and 17 kills, respectively.
Freshman setter Tia Chavira made her collegiate debut with a double-double (46 assists, 10 digs) as she paced the Beach offense to a .276 attack percentage.
Senior libero Hailey Harward led the defensive attack with 20 digs, while Dylan Dela Cruz and Carly Hill added 14 and 9, respectively.
The Bulldogs (1-1) won the first set, but the Beach were unfazed as they came back and edged out UNC Asheville 27-27 in the second set to even the match at one set apiece.
Long Beach State found its groove with a dominating performance in the third set as the Beach hit .400 (13-1-30) and forced the Bulldogs into a negative attack percentage (-.033) en route to winning , 25-12.
The fourth set was competitive for both squads, but saw UNC Asheville come out, 25-20, on top forcing a fifth and deciding set.
The Beach and Bulldogs traded points early on in the fifth set, but Long Beach State took control and came away with the set and match.
Long Beach State will close out the Georgia Tech Tournament today at 1 p.m. (PT)/4 p.m. (ET) when the Beach go up against Southern University.
