Long Beach State Opens 2019 Season at Georgia Tech Tournament
The Long Beach State women's volleyball team hits the hardwood for the first time in 2019 as the Beach open the season at the Georgia Tech Tournament in Atlanta. The Beach begin the tournament against host Georgia Tech on Friday, August 30 at 4 p.m. (PT). LBSU will play UNC Asheville and Southern University on Saturday, August 31 on the final day of the tournament. Match times are 7 a.m. (PT) and 1 p.m. (PT), respectively.
About The Beach
• Head coach Joy McKienzie-Fuerbringer begins her third season at the helm of the Long Beach State women's volleyball program. In her first two seasons, she has put together a record of 26-32.
• The Beach went 16-13 last season and 8-8 in Big West play.
• Long Beach State returns 2018 Big West All-Conference selections Hailey Harward, YiZhi Xue - both Honorable Mention selections - as well as Kashauna Williams who was named to the All-Freshman team.
• In addition to Harward, Xue, and Williams, the Beach welcome back a total of 10 letterwinners highlighted by sophomore outside hitter Allison Martinez, sophomore defensive specialist Carly Hill, and sophomore setter Carly Aigner-Swesey.
• Long Beach State also welcomes eight newcomers to the Beach highlighted by freshman defensive specialist Nicole Hoff, freshman setter Tia Chavira and sophomore transfer Amanda Henderson.
• The Beach were chosen to finish fifth in the Big West Preseason Coaches Poll behind Cal Poly, Hawaii, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Irvine, respectively.

2018 in Review
Long Beach State is coming off of a 16-13 season in 2018. The Beach posted an 8-8 record in Big West Conference action finishing sixth in the conference. The Beach strung together at least three-straight wins four times last season and ended the year on a three-match winning streak defeating conference foes UC Riverside (3-1), Cal State Fullerton (3-1), and CSUN (3-0).
The Beach was led offensively by senior Tyler Spriggs (3.07 kills per set) and Kashauna Williams (2.65 kills per set), while hitting. 235 on the year. Hailey Harward contributed on both sides of the ball notching an average of 2.11 kills per set to go along with a team-leading 3.39 digs per set.
At the net, the Beach were led by the duo of YiZhi Xue and Emma Kirst who posted 1.03 and 1.06 blocks per set, respectively.
Spriggs was named to the Big West All-Conference First Team, while Harward, Xue and Kirst were all Honorable Mention selections. Williams, meanwhile, was named to the Big West All-Freshman Team.
Can You Dig It?
Hailey Harward enters her senior season ranked ninth in the Long Beach State career record book with 1,144 digs. The defensive specialist/libero is just 45 digs away from moving into eight place all-time and is 135 career digs shy of tying Long Beach State legend Misty May with 1,279.
Block Party
Senior middle blocker YiZhi Xue begins her final collegiate season at Long Beach State ranked in the top 10 in the LBSU career record book as she has posted 306 block assists. Xue is just 15 block assists shy of taking ninth place.

Long Beach State hosts the LBSU Mizuno Classic Sept. 5-7. The Beach welcome Texas State, Georgia and UCLA to the Walter Pyramid. The Beach take on Texas State in the home opener.
