The Beach Sweeps Southern in Dominating Performance

Allison Martinez led all scorers with 13 kills on a .478 attack percentage

ATLANTA – Long Beach State went 2-0 on the final day of the Georgia Tech Tournament as the Beach closed the day with a dominating 3-0 [25-14, 25-11, 25-12] sweep of Southern University.
LBSU (2-1) received another solid outing from Allison Martinez who came off the bench to lead all scorers with 13 kills on a .478 attack percentage. The sophomore outside hitter also added three blocks and two digs. Kashauna Williams and YiZhi Xue continued their excellent offensive showings tallying nine kills each.
Senior middle blocker Kjersti Norveel posted four blocks, while adding eight kills to go along with a .538 attack percentage.
Freshman Tia Chavira got the start at setter and piloted the Beach to a .402 attack percentage as she dished out 36 assists, four digs, one ace, one block, and one kill.
Defensively, senior libero Hailey Haward led the way with seven digs, while Jade Waskom contributed six digs, and Nicole Hoff added five.
Long Beach State was on point from the start as the Beach held the Jaguars (0-3) to a negative attack percentage (-.013) for the match, while hitting over .400. The Beach kept the Jaguars guessing throughout the match as they rolled past Southern in all three sets.
The Beach averaged a sideout percentage of 79% for the match and hit over .500 in the second and third sets.
LBSU never trailed in the third set as they rolled to a 25-12 victory to complete the sweep.
Long Beach State returns home to host the LBSU Mizuno Classic at the Walter Pyramid September 5-7. The Beach will welcome Texas State, Georgia, and UCLA for the four-team, three-day tournament.
