Sheffield will lead the USA Track and Field team July 26-August 11 in Lima, Peru.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State Women's Track and Field Head Coach LaTanya Sheffield will take another turn with the United States Track and Field program, leading the USA women's team in the upcoming Pan American Games in Peru beginning on July 26.

"Representing the United States as a Head Track and Field Coach is an awesome opportunity. It's once in a lifetime," said Sheffield. "I am blessed to be selected by my peers to lead our women's team as they vie for podium performances against the best athletes in the world. My job is to create an environment of support where our American athletes will happily run fast, jump high, throw big, run for a long time, and play in the sand. I thank our Beach Athletic Department Family for your support as we bring home many Gold Medals."

Sheffield has previous national team coaching experience, serving as an assistant coach leading the women's sprinters and relay teams at the 2016 Rio Olympics. At those Games, the USA won Gold in both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays, took five of six available medals in the hurdles including a podium sweep of the 100m hurdles. Her charges also captured three additional women's sprint medals.

In addition to her Olympic experience, Sheffield has served as an assistant coach for the women's sprinters on multiple occasions at the World Championships, and was in charge of the women's sprints, hurdles and relays at the 2007 and 2011 Pan American Games.

Long Beach State has won the Big West Championship on either the Men's or Women's side in six of the seven seasons since Sheffield was hired as an assistant coach at the Beach. Coach Sheffield was recently promoted from her previous role as associate head coach and is the new head coach for the women's track and field program at Long Beach State.

Joining Coach Sheffield at the Pan American Games will be former Long Beach State athlete Riley Cooks, who was selected to compete for Team USA in the heptathlon.
