Former Dirtbag Jeff McNeil was named to the 2019 National League All-Star team and will represent the New York Mets at the Midsummer Classic in Cleveland on July 9. McNeil will be making his first All-Star Game appearance in just his second big league season. It will be the 20th ASG appearance in Dirtbags history.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Former Dirtbags utility man Jeff McNeil has been named a 2019 National League All-Star, continuing his impressive rise in professional baseball. McNeil, 27, is in just his second big league campaign with the New York Mets after debuting on July 24, 2018. He went from standout rookie in his first season to NL All-Star in year two, and he is currently the leading hitter in all of Major League Baseball with a .348 batting average as of July 1.
Â
McNeil joins an illustrious list of former Dirtbags who have gone on to be MLB All-Stars, along with Steve Trachsel (1996), Jason Giambi (2000-04), Evan Longoria (2008-10), Troy Tulowitzki (2010-11, 13-15) Jered Weaver (2010-12), Marco Estrada (2016), and Jason Vargas (2017). McNeil's All-Star selection is the 20th in Dirtbags history and he is the fourth different Dirtbag to earn an All-Star nod in the last five seasons.
Â
After breaking out as a midsummer call-up in 2018 and finishing sixth in Rookie of the Year voting, McNeil has been even better for the Mets this season. The versatile utilityman has been primarily used in the outfield this season, and that's where he's listed on the National League All-Star team. So far this season, McNeil has played 43 games in left field, 22 games at second base, 15 games at third base and nine in right field.
Â
McNeil was selected to the All-Star Team via player vote, meaning he earned the admiration of his peers to receive this honor. That respect is certainly deserved, as McNeil has 93 hits in just 71 games and is tied for seventh in baseball with 23 doubles despite missing 14 games due to a hamstring injury earlier this season.
Â
The 2019 Major League Baseball All-Star Game will be played on Tuesday, July 9 at Progressive Field in Cleveland. The game will be broadcast live on FOX starting at 7:30 p.m. ET.

What a terrific rookie season it was for @JeffMcNeil805! Among rookies who played 50+ games, nobody provided more WAR per game than McNeil. His .329 AVG & 6 triples also led all qualified rookies.
