Junior Sydney McCollum, Sophomore Alyssa Gonzalez both named third-team All-West Region.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State had two players receive NFCA All-Region honors, as sophomore Alyssa Gonzalez and junior Sydney McCollum were both selected to the third team for the West Region.
Both Gonzalez and McCollum were in their first seasons at Long Beach State and had made an immediate impact at the Beach.
Gonzalez came to the Beach last season but was forced to sit out during the 2018 season as a Division I transfer, making her debut in 2019 with Long Beach State. One of Long Beach State's power bats in the middle of the lineup, Gonzalez hit .338 with five home runs and 40 RBI, but was also a difficult out with an on-base percentage of .401. Gonzalez walked 17 times with just eight strikeouts, and was one of the nation's most difficult batters to strike out.
Starting 48 games, Gonzalez was second on the team with 10 doubles and started at least 10 games in three different defensive positions.
McCollum came to the Beach from Cypress College and played a major role in 2019, starting in 46 games. Most importantly for the Beach, McCollum moved to third base mid-season against UCLA and would start the final 29 games of the season there, making just three errors at the position while playing a big part at the plate as well.
The junior hit .313 overall with 10 doubles and a home run. A tough out, McCollum walked 14 times and was hit six, and led Long Beach State with eight stolen bases in 2019.
