Men’s Golf Sits Second After 36 Holes at Big West Championship

Long Beach State is in second place with one round to play at the 2019 Big West Men’s Golf Championship in Lihue, Hawai’i. The Beach are just three shots back of leaders UC Irvine, paced by junior Hunter Reed who is tied for sixth after day one.
LIHUE, Hawai'i – Long Beach State is just three shots off the lead after 36 holes at the Big West Men's Golf Championship at Wailua Golf Course, trailing only UC Irvine going into Tuesday's final round. Junior Hunter Reed is tied for sixth on the individual leaderboard to lead the way for Long Beach State, shooting 1-over in rainy conditions on Monday.
The Beach were in a tie for fourth and 10 shots off the lead after the first 18 holes, but tied for the low score in round two to gain seven shots on the Anteaters and move into sole possession of second place. LBSU (+13) will look to catch UCI (+10) on Tuesday while holding off UC Davis (+15) and Cal State Fullerton (+16) in the most immediate chase pack.
Reed was steady for the Beach on Monday, shooting aa 1-over 73 in round one before shooting even-par in the second round. His first 18 was active, as he rode a roller coaster of a front nine with three birdies and two bogeys to make the turn at -1. He bogeyed twice on the back nine to emerge a shot over par for the round, and played mostly to par in the second. He bogeyed No. 2 and birdied No. 4 before collecting 14 straight pars to stay near the top of the leaderboard.
A pair of golfers are in a tie for 11th for Long Beach State, with junior Hunter Epson making a big turnaround during his day on the golf course. After shooting a 77 in the first round, Epson shot a 2-under 70 in his second. Only two golfers had a better second-round score than Epson, who had five birdies over his final 18 holes.
Freshman Tyler Schafer is also tied for 11th place, shooting a 73 in round one and a 74 in round two. In both rounds, he collected birdies on Nos. 1, 9, and 13, making eight birdies total in his round. He also had 11 birdies coming on 10 different holes on the golf course.
Senior Joe Fryer eagled the first hole in his second round, and put up a pair of 75's to sit 6-over for the tournament in a tie for 18th place. Freshman Bryce Kvick is in a tie for 31st after the first two rounds.
LBSU will tee off with UC Irvine and UC Davis, starting at 8:10 a.m. HT/11:10 a.m. PT on the first tee. Live scoring will be provided on GolfStat.com.
