
Cal Poly Clinches Series With 7-1 Win Over Dirtbags

Long Beach State mustered just four hits on Friday night, falling 7-1 in game two of its weekend series against visiting Cal Poly. Jacob Hughey stretched his hitting streak to six games and Chase Luttrell lined an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning to highlight LBSU’s night.

Jacob Hughey lined a single into center field in the third inning to extend his hitting streak to six games. That matches the longest hitting streak of the year for the Dirtbags, tying Calvin Estrada. Santino Rivera, Kaden Hogan, and Chase Luttrell were the other LBSU batters who collected base hits on Friday. Luttrell put the Dirtbags on the scoreboard with a line-drive single to right field to score Brooks Stotler in the bottom of the first inning.

 Junior Nick Avila took the loss on the mound, going five innings while allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts. Three pitchers combined to work the final four innings for Long Beach State, with John Sheaks allowing a run in two innings pitched and freshmen Jonathan Carlos and Ethan Clough each tossing a scoreless frame.

Long Beach State will look to salvage the series finale on Saturday afternoon with LHP Zak Baayoun (2-6, 4.88 ERA) getting the start against RHP Darren Nelson (2-5, 4.46 ERA) for Cal Poly. First pitch will be at 2 p.m.
