Hunter Epson Tied for Third After Day One at El Macero Classic

Junior Hunter Epson is one of just five players to shoot under par on day one of the El Macero Classic on Friday. His 1-under round of 71 has helped lead Long Beach State to a tie for eighth place after 18 holes at El Macero Country Club.
EL MACERO, Calif. – It was a solid opening round for Long Beach State at the El Macero Classic on Friday. The Beach currently sit in a tie for eighth place with Fresno State and are just four shots back of third place. On the individual leaderboard, junior Hunter Epson is tied for third place with two other players after his opening-round 71, which leaves him at -1 after 18 holes.
Epson was even after the front nine, making nothing but pars for the first 10 holes of his round. He was able to pick up a shot at the Par-4 11th hole, and went 2-under thanks to a birdie on the Par-4 15th. Epson was tied atop the leaderboard before dropping a shot on the 18th. He is just one shot off the lead going into Saturday's second round.
The second-best finisher for the Beach on Friday was senior Joe Fryer, who ended in a tie for sixth after his even-par round of 72. Fryer made a birdie and three bogeys on his front nine, but was 2-under after the turn including a birdie on the Par-5 18th to finish off his round.
Long Beach State will return to action on Saturday morning as tee times begin at 10 a.m. off the first tee.
