Beach Drops Both In Saturday Doubleheader

Long Beach State finishes the Louisville Slugger Invitational against No. 2 UCLA Sunday.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State had a rare off day at the plate and the struggles cost the Beach in a pair of losses at home Saturday against San Diego State and Ohio. The Beach combined for seven hits and two runs in the losses.
In the opener, it was Long Beach State (8-13) that struck first as the Beach made a couple of strong defensive plays to keep San Diego State (12-12) in the first three innings. In the bottom of the third, Long Beach State drew a pair of walks to put two runners on for Taylor Rowland, who came through with an RBI single to put the Beach out in front 1-0.
A leadoff single put the leadoff batter on for the fourth inning in a row for the Aztecs, and this time SDSU made the Beach pay. A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases, and Jessica Cordola drove in a pair with a single to give San Diego State the lead.
A Long Beach State error led to an insurance run in the sixth, and the Aztecs scored one more in the seventh in support of Alicia Garcia, who went the distance, allowing just three hits despite walking five Long Beach State batters.
Ohio (14-8) jumped out in front of Long Beach State in the first inning and was able to hold on to the momentum throughout in a 5-1 win. The first four batters of the game all reached, scoring a pair of runs in the process, and the Bobcats would push across two more before Ashley Coleman was able to get out of the inning.
Long Beach State ended up leaving eight batters on as the Beach would threaten in most innings, but were only able to get on the scoreboard in the sixth on a Jamie Wren RBI single following a leadoff walk to Justine Briones.
Long Beach State finishes out the Louisville Slugger Invitational on Sunday. The LBSU Softball Complex will play host to two more neutral contests scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. before Long Beach State hosts No. 2 UCLA in the tournament's finale.
