Long Beach State Comes Out Flat in Series-Opening Loss to Fullerton

3/22/2019 10:45:00 PM | Baseball

The Dirtbags dropped the first game of the series against Cal State Fullerton on Friday night, falling into a 6-0 hole after two innings before ultimately falling 8-3. Aidan Malm and Kaden Hogan each had career highs with three hits to lead the offense.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State (3-17) dropped the opening game of its rivalry series with Cal State Fullerton (9-10) on Friday night at Blair Field, 8-3. LBSU outhit the visitors 11-7, but were undone by 10 walks issued to the Titans.

Aidan Malm and Kaden Hogan each set career highs with three hits apiece on Friday, each scoring a run while Hogan added an RBI. For Malm, it was his first start since an injury took him out of the game at Ole Miss on Mar. 2. For the freshman Hogan, it was his first multi-hit game and his first run and RBI as a Dirtbag in just his third start. The Dirtbags had three extra-base hits compared to just one for Fullerton, but the Titans had four players who reached on walks come around to score.

LBSU pitchers matched their season-high with 10 walks issued on Friday, including five straight to start the second inning. Freshmen Jonathan Carlos and Alfredo Ruiz did a nice job to finish off the game, as Carlos worked a career-high 3.1 innings allowing a hit and a walk, and Ruiz pitched a perfect ninth.

LBSU scored in the second inning on an RBI single from freshman Tyler Porter to score Malm, and would outscore the Titans 2-0 over the final four frames. Hogan had an RBI double in the seventh and Jacob Hughey extended his RBI streak to five straight games, while also increasing his team-high in that category to 14, with an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth.

Long Beach State will look to even up the series tomorrow as LHP Adam Seminaris (2-2, 2.87 ERA) will get the start against RHP Kyle Luckham (2-2, 5.40 ERA) for Fullerton. First pitch on Bohl Diamond is at 6 p.m.
