Jamie Wren’s grand slam highlights 10-5 win over Southern Utah.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Jamie Wren's third-inning grand slam was the big hit in a 10-5 victory in the first game of the season for Long Beach State over Southern Utah at the Marucci Desert Classic in Las Vegas.

Long Beach State (1-0) got off to a quick start as Naomi Hernandez led off the game with a single to continue her hitting streak, but the sophomore was stranded in the first.

Southern Utah (0-2) took an early lead in the third inning, taking advantage of a pair of LBSU errors to take a 1-0 lead as Weaver came around to score.

In the bottom half of the inning, Hernandez got the action started with a one-out walk, whith was followed by a single from freshman Emily Salazar. A walk to Taylor Rowland loaded the bases, which Jamie Wren then promptly cleared with a grand slam to center field on the first home of the year.

Southern Utah pulled back a pair of runs in the fourth inning, but the Beach broke the game open with four more runs in the bottom of the fourth.

A Katelyn Hanson solo home run gave LBSU a two-run cushion, and Hernandez and Salazar kept the rally going with back-to-back walks. A third walk loaded the bases in front of Alyssa Gonzalez, who singled home a pair of runs, and then Wren added her fifth RBI of the game on a single to make the score 8-3.

The teams once again traded runs in the sixth. After the Thunderbirds scored a pair in the top half, Justine Briones hit her first career home run to start off the bottom half of the inning, and back-to-back hits from Tierra Falo and Rowland led to the tenth and final run for the Beach.

Juniors Devyn Magnett and Ashley Coleman shared the pitching load, with Magnett getting the start and pitching 3.2 innings, while Coleman was credited with the win after pitching the remaining 3.1 innings. Both pitchers allowed a pair of earned runs on the day.
