FULLERTON, Calif. – Junior forward Aaryon Green turned in a career-high performance as she led Long Beach State with a double-double in a 59-53 victory at Cal State Fullerton Saturday night.
The Beach (6-14, 3-4 Big West) win snapped a four-game losing streak as Green led the team with a career-high 14 points and 10 rebounds. She shot 57.1 percent (4-for-7) from the field and connected on 6-of-8 free throws in the win over the Titans (11-9, 3-4 Big West).
Long Beach State boasted three double-figure scorers. In addition to Green's effort, sophomores Shanaijah Davison and Naomi Hunt contributed 11 and 10-point performances, respectively. Cydnee Kinslow had a big night as well as she grabbed seven boards, while adding five points, four steals, and two assists. Meanwhile, Justina King added eight points, six assists, one rebound, and one steal in the win.
LBSU got off to a strong start as the Beach shot 40-percent (6-for-15) from the field in the opening 10 minutes. Even more impressive, the Long Beach State defense did not allow Fullerton a field goal as the Titans were 0-for-13 from the field. The Titans were held to just two points in the frame – the least amount of points a Long Beach State team has ever held an opponent to in a single quarter. The two points came on a pair of free throw attempts as the Titans finished the quarter shooting 2-for-4 from the line as the Beach took a 16-2 lead into the second frame.
The Beach continued their hot shooting into the second quarter as they connected on 7-of-11 shots to shoot 63.6 percent from the field. Fullerton managed to heat up in the frame and scored 13 points. However, Long Beach State took a commanding 34-15 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Titans came out of the locker room and outscored the Beach in each of the next two quarters, but the early lead by Long Beach State sustained as LBSU stymied Cal State Fullerton's comeback attempt. The Beach would hold on to win, 59-53.
Cal State Fullerton got a double-double from Daeja Smith (10 points, 11 rebounds) as well as a pair of double-figure efforts from Carolyn Gill (13 points) and Amiee Book (12 points).
Long Beach State will continue its road swing as the Beach travel to Cal Poly for a Wednesday, Feb. 6 match up. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
