No. 8 Beach Volleyball Opens the Season With a Pair of Sweeps

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The No. 8 Long Beach State Beach Volleyball team kicked off the 2019 season with a pair of 5-0 sweeps over Cal State Los Angeles and Long Beach City College on Tuesday at the LBSU Sand Courts.
The Beach (2-0) opened the day against Cal State LA (1-4) and dominated from the start. LBSU went up 2-0 after No. 2 Nicci Reinking and Zoi Konstantopoulou rolled over Janessa Mata and Jessica Kaeka, 21-11, 21-6 to highlight the first round of matches. Following the No. 2 and No. 4 pairs, the tandem of Megan Kruidhof and Mari Molina who played at No. 1 earned a convincing 21-11, 21-8 victory over Karla Santos and Alejandra Negron.
Long Beach State's No. 3 Aliie Loitz and Sydney Stevens paired up to defeat Sifa Faaiu and Daisy Crenshaw, 21-9, 21-8 in Stevens' collegiate debut. Also holding the Golden Eagles to single digits were No. 5 Tyler Spriggs and Michelle Mason who won 21-8, 21-9 over Caitlyn Bato and Adriana Maldonado.
With a sweep under their belt, Long Beach State came back in the afternoon and handed Long Beach City College (4-2) a 5-0 loss.
Against the Vikings, the Beach received an outstanding showing from No. 2 Reinking and Konstantopoulou as they sailed through with a pair of 21-7 victories over Brooklin Mize and Kylee Irwin-Paz. No. 5 Spriggs and Mason also posted a dominating performance as they picked up a 21-6, 21-11 win over Brooke Gonsalves and Emma Harris.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Saturday, March 2 in Malibu, Calif. The Beach will start the day against CSUN at 8 a.m., before taking on host Pepperdine at 11 a.m., and CSU Bakersfield at 12 noon.
