Junior Hunter Epson fired a 3-under round of 69 on Tuesday to move up into a tie for 5th at The Farms Invitational. It’s the best finish of Epson’s career and it helped Long Beach State record a third-place team finish down in Rancho Santa Fe.

RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. -- Junior Hunter Epson continues his strong play for Long Beach State, notching the first Top 5 finish of his career at The Farms Invitational, hosted by The University of San Diego. Epson had the second-best score in Tuesday's final round, firing a 3-under 69. That number trailed only the tournament winner, and No. 2 ranked player in the country, Colin Morikawa from Cal.

That helped Long Beach State to a third-place finish in team scoring, finishing five shots back of second place. That is LBSU's best finish of the season after placing fourth at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational.

Epson opened the final round on the par-4 first hole and immediately made birdie to start his round the right way. He would also birdie No. 6 to make the turn at 2-under. He promptly birdied the 10th to move 3-under for the day, and would have an up-and-down finish to his tournament over the back stretch. Over the final seven holes, Epson posted three bogeys and three birdies to finish 3-under for the day, closing it out with back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18.

Senior Joe Fryer checked in with a 71 on Tuesday, recording his second round below par for the tournament.  After dropping a shot on his second hole, Fryer made five birdies and eight pars over his next 13 to temporarily move to 4-under on the day before finishing one shot under par. Fryer finished in 14th place for the Beach to record his third Top 15 finish of the season. Freshman Tyler Schafer finished in a tie for 18th to register his second career Top 20 finish.

The Beach will return to action Feb. 21-23 for the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at Wailua Golf Club in Lihue, Hawai'i. That is the site of the 2019 Big West Championships, giving the Beach an important tune-up a little over two months in advance.
