LONG BEACH, Calif. – A 3-0 [25-19, 25-18, 25-21] sweep of Ohio State to close out the AVCA Showcase gave No. 1 Long Beach State its 12th straight win of the season, but also marked the 32nd straight victory inside the Walter Pyramid for the Beach, which ties the program's longest home winning streak.
Having not lost a match inside the Pyramid in nearly three years, the Beach have now tied the program record for most consecutive home victories. The last time LBSU won 32 straight home matches was from 1998-2001. Long Beach State's last loss inside the 'Mid came on March 26, 2016 against then-No. 2 UCLA.
The Beach kept the steak alive as they rolled past the Buckeyes (4-8) behind a .475 attack percentage. Josh Tuaniga piloted Long Beach State's offense as he dished out 31 assists and contributed four kills of his own on as many attempts. The senior duo of Kyle Ensing and TJ DeFalco led the way with 11 and 10 kills, respectively, while Louis Richard, Simon Andersen, and Nick Amado each added four kills of their own.
Long Beach State led throughout the first and second sets, never allowing Ohio State to take a lead. The Beach hit .348 in the first set and the defense held the Buckeyes to a .136 attack percentage as LBSU claimed a 25-19 win.
The second set was much of the same as the Beach broke three early ties before opening up a five-point lead (14-9) to force an Ohio State timeout after an ace by Amado. From there, Long Beach State extended its advantage to seven (20-13) after back-to-back kills from DeFalco en route to winning the second set, 25-18, on .667 (13-1-18) hitting.
Ohio State managed to take its first lead of the match in the third set as the two team traded leads three times and battled through 11 ties. Eventually, the Beach broke through and went on a 6-0 run to take a 17-13 lead. After going ahead by four, Long Beach State led the remainder of the set and earned a 25-21 win to complete the sweep.
