Long Beach State Falls at No. 11 UCLA

LOS ANGELES – A slow start hampered Long Beach State as the Beach were unable to overcome an early 20-point deficit as LBSU dropped an 86-51 contest to No. 11 UCLA on Thursday morning in Pauley Pavilion.
The Beach (1-2) got off to a slow start as they were held scoreless for the first seven and a half minutes of action. At that point, UCLA (3-0) had taken a 20-point lead and was controlling the game. Long Beach State shrugged off it first quarter struggles and came out in the second quarter shooting 46.7 percent from the field. Justina King closed the quarter with eight points, highlighted by a pair of threes, to make it a 52-26 game at halftime.
Long Beach State turned in a strong showing in the third quarter and managed to cut a once 32-point deficit (50-18) down to 21 (56-35) after Shanaijah Davison sunk a layup at 5:45. However, that was as close as the Beach would get. UCLA would push its lead back up to 29 (71-42) heading in to the final 10 minutes of action, before going up by as many as 36 (82-46) in the fourth quarter.
King led the Beach with 22 points to go along with four rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Davison also reached double-figures with 10 points, while adding a pair of boards. Meanwhile, Cydnee Kinslow grabbed 11 rebounds, while Kianna Hamilton-Fisher collected seven to go along with seven points.
UCLA's Michaela Onyenwere led three double-figure scorers for the Bruins as she registered 27 points, while Kiara Jefferson added 13 and Chantel Horvat contributed 11. Japreece Dean led the squad with 11 assists, while posting a team-high eight rebounds and seven points.
The Beach shot 33.3 (19-57) in the game, while the Bruins connected on 33-of-71 field goals for a field goal percentage of 46.5.
Long Beach State will be back at the Walter Pyramid on Monday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. when the Beach host Utah State.
