LBSU T&F Finishes Strong in Opening Weekend at the Air Force Invitational

LBSU produced multiple events wins at the Air Force Invitational to earn a second place finish on both the men’s and women’s side.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The opening meet of the 2019 indoor track & field season was a success for Long Beach State, as the Beach finished with three event wins from both the men's and women's team.

Star athlete Courtne' Davis defended her title in the women's 60 meter dash and broke her own school record of 7.38 with a blazing time of 7.37 setting the tone for her last indoor season. She also earned her second victory of the meet in the and 200 meters with a time of 24.33 to earn 20 points for the Beach. Bria Palmer opened up her season with a victory, leaping to a 5-10.50 clearance in the high jump. Both LBSU men's and women's teams earned 99.5 points to place second overall.
 
Solid performances continued throughout Saturday's finals on the women's side, displaying the quality of depth on the team. Freshman Anitha Graves took second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:25.61, and teammate Ryley Fick was third at 2:27.09. New member to the Beach, Skylin Harbin placed third in the women's 60 meter hurdles finals with a time of 8.61, earning the third spot on the Long Beach State all-time list. Diana Acholonu finished in the high jump in fourth at 5-07, earning 5.5 points for the Beach. Senior Melanee Williams was also a point scorer in the long jump, finishing third with a mark of 18-06.50 and Allison Foster in the triple jump with a seventh place finish. In the sprints, Azaria Hill was third in the 60m with a new personal-best time of 7.56 and fourth in the 200 at 24.81.
 
On the men's side, Koty Burton set a new school record in the 60-meter hurdles and at his first indoor collegiate meet, running a time of 7.92.  That broke the previous Long Beach State record of 8.01, set last year by Raleigh Adams. Burton's performance earned the Beach 10 points. Senior Kemonie Briggs also had a successful second day, taking second in the 400-meter with a time of 48.60. Sophomore Faris Babineaux was fifth in that event with a time of 49.58.
 
All-American Jason Smith took flight to an event victory in the high jump and new personal-best mark of 7-00.25, jumping up to fourth on the Long Beach State men's indoor all-time list. Senior Vincent Calhoun finished fourth in his come back season with a mark of 6-07.75. Senior Blair Robinson took the win in the men's triple jump with a mark of 49.01.50 and contributing 10 points for the Beach. Tavi Kamarullah and Charlie Vernoy had great performances in the shot put, finishing second and third to score big points for the men's team. On the sprint side, junior Kent Harris scored in multiple events for LBSU on Saturday, finishing sixth in both the 60m and 200 meter dash.
 
Beach Track & Field will return to action on Feb. 8-9 at the Don Kirby Elite in Albuquerque, N.M. This meet will serve as final preparation for the MPSF Championships Feb. 22-23, in Seattle, Washington.
