Beach Tennis Takes On UC Riverside To Kick Off Dual Match Play

Saturday’s match also marks the first dual of Big West competition.
LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Long Beach State Women's Tennis team looks to get off to a strong start they face UC Riverside in the 2019 dual match season opener at Rhodes Tennis Center. The Beach will play the Highlanders on Saturday, January 26 at Noon. The contest opens Big West Conference action for the Beach.
LBSU is coming off of a successful showing at the Beach Tennis Invitational last week. Wiktoria Rutkowska and Dominique Meyer were named the tournament champions in doubles, and overall the Beach piled up a 16-6 record in singles. Â
This season, the Beach returns four players from the 2018 season with one upperclassman in junior Natalia Munoz, who earned second-team All-Big West honors in doubles with returning sophomore Lalita Devarakonda. Also returning is sophomore Sadaf Sadeghvaziri, who earned second-team All-Big West in doubles. Playing with Lena Pacholski, pair went 9-1 in dual matches together last season.
Additionally, The Beach adds four newcomers, which includes Rutkowska, who has been successful thus far. She was named the Big West Player of the Week in her first opportunity and is 10-4 in singles entering the spring campaign.
She's joined by three other first-year players in Meyer, Emma Bardet and Zara Lennon, as the quartet readies for their first dual competition.
For the second year in a row, Long Beach State will open up conference play against the Highlanders. Last season, LBSU picked up a 5-2 victory at UC Riverside as they improved to 1-0 in Big West action.
Weather in the area is expected to be sunny prior to the start of Saturday's action. Admission is free.
