
Beach Track & Field Completes a Strong Opening Day at the Air Force Invitational.

Long Beach State opened up their 2019 indoor track and field season on Friday at the Air Force Invitational, getting an individual event win from senior Diana Acholonu in the high jump.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Long Beach State opened up their 2019 indoor track and field season on Friday at the Air Force Invitational. The Beach had a strong opening day of competition, including an event win from senior Diana Acholonu in the high jump.
Acholonu won her first indoor title, almost hitting a personal-best mark with a jump of 5-07 to pull in nine points. Both LBSU men's and women's teams stand in third place after day one with 21 and 31 points.
In the field, Delaney Smith jumps a lifetime best of 5-07 to earn five points for the Beach and a fourth place finish. In the women's weight throw, senior De'Ondra Young took second with a mark of 62-09.50 to bring in eight points for the Beach. In the women's pole vault, sophomore Teresa Tamashiro placed third with a mark of 11-11.75, to surpass her personal-best mark set last year.
On the track, Courtne' Davis had a solid day in the prelims, finishing as the top qualifier in the 60-meters with a time of 7.44. She will also advance in the 200m, winning her heat with a time of 24.83. Followed closely behind her was Azaria Hill with a fourth place qualifying time in the 60-meters and advancement in the 200m. Other qualifiers from Friday include Madison Golden in the 60-meters, plus Skylin Harbin in the 60-meter hurdles, posting a time of 8.74.
Leading day one on the men's side was Koty Burton, with the third-best time of 8.17 in the 60-meter hurdles during his first collegiate indoor meet. New to the Beach, junior Derreck Affor grabs a qualifying time of 8.35 to advance as well.
Also showcasing a solid start to the season was Kemonie Briggs, who placed second in the men's long jump with a mark of 24-03 to pull in eight points. Right behind him was junior Jason Smith with a third place finish and jump of 24-02, bringing in six points for the Beach. On the sprint side, Kent Harris had the fourth-fastest qualifying time in the 60-meters, placing second to advance to Saturday's final. He will also advance in the 200m, opening up with a time of 21.95 to win his heat. In the men's weight throws, Josh Carr took sixth with a mark of 58-07.75 and Charlie Vernoy was seventh at 58-02.50. Quarter horse Faris Babineaux will advance in the 400-meters, finishing third with a qualifying time of 49.37.
LBSU will conclude the Air Force Invitational with a full day of competition on Saturday.
