Long Beach State T&F set to compete in their first meet of the season.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Long Beach State Track and Field team begins the 2019 indoor season this weekend, sending off a strong group of athletes to the Air Force Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo. on Jan. 24-26. Over 50 athletes are scheduled to compete for the Beach in its season opener.
LBSU starts back up and is coming off a successful year where the women's team claimed their first Big West Conference Championship and sent four athletes to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, while the men's team placed second at the Big West Championships and sent two athletes to the Outdoor Championship finals. Gone from that previous team are star athletes Anaya Alexander, Ashleigh Chambers, Elijah McDonald, and Saladin Nasser. The Beach will return All-Americans Courtne' Davis, Madison Golden, Azaria Hill, De'Ondra Young, Vincent Calhoun, and Jason Smith.
The Beach competed in this event last season and are looking to build on event wins from 2018. Senior Courtne' Davis set a new school record in the indoor 60-meter dash last year at this meet, running a time of 7.34 to win the event. Other returners who won events at last year's meet are De'Ondra Young and Charlie Vernoy in the weight throw.
Long Beach State has multiple competitors in each of its field events for both the men and the women on day one, including the weight throw, pole vault, high jump, and long jump. Senior Kemonie Briggs is set to take flight in the long jump, coming off a successful outdoor season and becoming the 2018 Big West Champion with a mark of 26-00. Senior Bria Palmer is set to make her season debut in the high jump, placing 5th last year at this meet.
On the track, the Beach will have three members of the 4x100m relay school record team; Courtne' Davis, Madison Golden, Azaria Hill compete in the indoor 60-meter dash as well as the 200-meters. Junior and sprints team captain Kent Harris is set to premiere in the 200-meters and 60-meters as well as team member John Kendrick in the 60m.
