
Long Beach State Drops 3-0 Contest at No. 15 Cal Poly

Harward led the Beach with nine kills and eight digs in the loss

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Long Beach State women's volleyball team went up against No. 15 Cal Poly and fell in straight sets by scores of 18-25, 16-25, 18-25 on Saturday night at Mott Athletic Center.
The Beach (10-7, 2-2 Big West) were led by Hailey Harward's nine-kill, eight-dig effort. She also added a pair of blocks and an ace. Tyler Spriggs added eight kills, while Mina Andjelovic dished out 18 assists as LBSU hit .177 in the contest.
Cal Poly (15-1, 5-0 Big West) hit .337 in the match and was led by the Van Winden sisters Torrey (13 kills) and Adlee (10 kills). Torrey Van Winden notched a double-double as she added 14 digs.
Despite the loss, Long Beach State led Cal Poly on blocking defense as the Beach posted 7.0 total team blocks to the Mustangs' 4.0. YiZhi Xue led LBSU at the net with four blocks, while Emma Kirst and Spriggs added three each.
The Beach started the match with back-to-back points as they capitalized on a pair of attack errors by the Mustangs. Long Beach State held the lead in the early part of the set before Cal Poly evened the score at 5-5. From there the two teams traded points and found themselves knotted up five separate times. Eventually, the Mustangs broke the final tie of the frame on a kill by Jessica McRoskey as they took a 15-14 lead. From there, Cal Poly held the lead the rest of the way and went on to claim the first set, 25-18.
Long Beach State and Cal Poly stayed competitive with each other in the second set as the two teams were tied up a few times before the Mustangs went on a 6-1 run to take a 9-4 lead. With the game in their favor, the Mustangs kept the Beach guessing and went on to win the second set, 25-16.
Similar to the first set, LBSU opened up the third with a 2-0 lead. However, the Mustangs were quick to even the score (6-6) and then take an 8-6 lead forcing a Long Beach State timeout. Although the Beach came out of the break and made it a one-point game (8-7) that was as close as they would come as the Mustangs remained in the lead the rest of the way. Cal Poly went on to win, 25-18, to complete the sweep.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Friday, October 5 when the Beach hosts UC Irvine inside the Walter Pyramid at 7 p.m.
