LBSU Returns Home to Host UC Irvine in Black & Blue Rivalry, UC Davis on ESPN3

After spending last week on the road, the Long Beach State women's volleyball team returns to the Walter Pyramid to host UC Irvine and UC Davis. The Beach and the Anteaters will go head-to-head on Friday, October 5 at 7 p.m., before LBSU takes on UC Davis on Saturday, October 6 at 7 p.m. The Long Beach State-UC Davis match will be on ESPN3.

About The Beach
• Long Beach State dropped a pair of Big West Conference matches last week as the Beach fell to UC Santa Barbara (3-1) and No. 15 Cal Poly (3-0) on the road.
• The Beach are now 10-7 overall and 2-2 in league action.
• Long Beach State leads the league in blocks per set with 2.40. The Beach are strong at the net as Emma Kirst (1.11 blocks per set) and YiZhi Xue (1.09 blocks per set) are ranked No. 1 and 2 in the league.
• The Beach have been hot at the service line this season racking up 102 service aces on the year thus far. Hailey Harward has paced LBSU with 0.49 aces per set to rank in the top 25 in the nation.
• In addition to leading the team in aces, Harward also sets the tone offensively with 2.75 kills per set. Behind her are Kashauna Williams (2.59) and Tyler Spriggs (2.45).
• Adding to LBSU's hot hitting is freshman Allison Martinez. Martinez has been consistent offensively as she owns an attack percentage of .343 which is good for fourth in the league. Joining Martinez in the top 10 is Xue who is sixth in the conference with a .332 attack percentage.
Carly Aigner-Swesey and Mina Andjelkovic are splitting time at setter this season. Aigner-Swesey is averaging 7.82 assists per set, while Andjelkovic owns a 5.00 assists per set clip.
• At libero, Carly Hill has been pacing the defense with 4.00 digs per set to rank seventh in the Big West.

Scouting the Anteaters 
• UC Irvine comes into the match against the Beach with an 8-7 overall record. 
• The 'Eaters are 2-1 in Big West Conference action thus far with wins over UC Santa Barbara (3-1) and UC Davis (3-0). Their lone loss came against Hawaii in a five-set contest.
• Loryn Carter is the leading scorer for the 'Eaters as she averages 2.95 kills per set on .216 hitting. 
• Ali Koumelis is the team's setter as she has dished out 441 assists on the year to average 9.59 assists per set.
• Defensively, Haley DeSales paces the back row with 4.75 digs per set, while Idara Akpakpa guards the net with 1.02 blocks per set. 

Series vs. UC Irvine
Long Beach State and UC Irvine will meet in the Black and Blue Rivalry for the 83rd time in program history. The Beach leads the all-time series 71-11. A year ago, the two teams split the series with UCI taking the match in Irvine and LBSU winning the match inside the Pyramid. 

Scouting the Aggies
• UC Davis owns a record of 9-7 overall and the Aggies are 1-3 in Big West Conference play.
• The Aggies are coming off of a 3-2 win at UC Santa Barbara last week which snapped a four-match losing streak. 
• Emily Allen leads the Aggies with 4.05 kills per set, while adding 3.12 digs per set which is good for second on the team.
• Allen's digs per set average is second only to Malia Bolko who owns a 5.06 digs per set mark.
• At setter, UC Davis platoons Maddie Merlino and Paloma Bowman. Merlino averages 6.74 assists per set, while Bowman averages 3.29.
• At the net, Lauren Jackson has been leading the way with 35 total blocks for an average of 1.03 per set.

Series vs. UC Davis
Long Beach State and UC Davis will face off for the 28th time in program history in a series that dates back to 2004. The Beach lead the series with a 25-2 record. LBSU opened the series winning the first 25 match ups, but last year the Aggies picked up a pair of victories.

Leader of the Pack
Long Beach State has been solid on blocking defense this season as the Beach have posted 160.5 blocks this season for an average of 2.40 blocks per set. LBSU's blocks per set average is tops in the Big West Conference and is good for 57th in the nation.

1-2 Punch
With the Beach leading the league in blocks per set, it comes as no surprise that Long Beach State's Emma Kirst and YiZhi Xue own the two top statistical spots in blocks per set in the Big West. Kirst leads the way with 1.11 blocks per set, while Xue is hot on her heels with 1.09 blocks per set.

Hot Hitting
Not only does freshman Allison Martinez leads Long Beach State in hitting, she also ranks fourth in the Big West Conference with an attack percentage of .343. Martinez's hitting percentage is tops among all freshmen in the conference. In addition to Martinez, YiZhi Xue also is in the Big West top 10 as her clip of .332 is good for sixth in the league. 

Aces Wild
Junior Hailey Harward has been on fire from the service line all season. Harward has racked up a team- and conference-leading 32 aces thus far for an average of 0.49 which ranks her second in the league. Additionally, her aces per set mark ranks her 22nd in the nation, while her 32 total aces are good for ninth.

Up Next
Long Beach State will travel to Honolulu, Hawaii on October 12 to take on the Rainbow Wahine. The match is scheduled for 10 p.m. (PT).
