Long Beach State Suffers Setback at UC Santa Barbara

Tyler Spriggs records a double-double for the Beach in loss

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. –
The Long Beach State women's volleyball team dropped a tough contest at UC Santa Barbara on Friday night as the Beach fell in four by set scores of 23-25, 25-23, 17-25, 22-25 inside the Thunderdome.

The loss snaps a four-match winning streak as the Beach drop to 10-6 overall and 2-1 in Big West action. Meanwhile, the Gauchos improve to 11-5 on the year and 3-1 in league play.

Long Beach State received several strong performances and stayed close throughout the match, but came up just short in the end. Senior Tyler Spriggs led the Beach with a double-double as she recorded 17 kills and 10 digs, while hitting .319. She also contributed three blocks, two assists, and an ace.

Joining Spriggs in double-figures was freshman Kashauna Williams who finished the match with 14 kills. Mina Andjelkovic set the tone with 32 assists on the night as LBSU hit .205 in the contest.

Defensively Carly Hill was solid in the backrow as she collected 22 digs for her second 20-dig effort of the year. Additionally, Long Beach State's blocking game was on point once again as the Beach tallied 10.0 total team blocks and were led at the net by Emma Kirst and YiZhi Xue who each registered five total blocks.

While Long Beach State was competitive and played well, so did UC Santa Barbara. Led by Lindsey Ruddins' 24-kill effort, the Gauchos hit .253 in the match and had two players notch double-doubles. Leading the way was Ruddins who added 12 digs, while Olivia Lovenberg distributed 45 assists and posted 11 digs. Libero Emilia Petrachi paced the defense with 28 digs as she led a group of four who notched double-digit digs.

The match was back and forth from the start as the conference foes traded leads 13 times and broke 36 ties over the four sets. The first set alone saw 15 ties and five lead changes before the Gauchos edged the Beach, 25-23.

Long Beach State won the second set after hitting .256 with 14 kills, while holding UC Santa Barbara to a .182 attack percentage. The Beach broke a 16-16 tie after capitalizing on an error by the Gauchos went up for the final time of the frame. From there LBSU held the lead the rest of the way, despite UCSB's efforts. The Beach would go on to take the second set by a score of 25-23.

The third set belonged to UCSB from the start as the Gauchos opened the frame on a 3-0 run and never looked back. UC Santa Barbara held the lead throughout and went on to collect a 25-17 victory.

The fourth and final set was much like the first as the two teams battled through 14 ties and six lead changes. With the score knotted at 22-all, UC Santa Barbara closed out the match on a 3-0 run to win the set and match.

Long Beach State will be back in action on Saturday, September 29 at 7 p.m. when the Beach take on No. 15 Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.
