Long Beach State Heads to Central Coast to Play UCSB, Cal Poly
The Long Beach State women's volleyball team hits the road this week as the Beach travel to UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly. LBSU will take on UCSB on Friday, September 28 at 7 p.m., before going up against Cal Poly on Saturday, September 29 at 7 p.m. 

About The Beach
• Long Beach State kicked off Big West Conference action with a pair of wins over UC Riverside (3-0) and CSUN (3-2) last week.
• The Beach are now 10-5 overall and are riding a four-match winning streak.
• The 10 victories match the team's win total from a year ago.
• Long Beach State leads the league in blocks per set with 2.39. The Beach are strong at the net as Emma Kirst (1.08 blocks per set) and YiZhi Xue (1.07 blocks per set) are ranked No. 1 and 2 in the league.
• The Beach have been hot at the service line this season racking up 3 service aces on the year thus far. Hailey Harward has paced LBSU with 0.50 aces per set to rank in the top 25 in the nation.
• In addition to leading the team in aces, Harward also sets the tone offensively with 2.84 kills per set. Behind her are Kashauna Williams (2.63) and Tyler Spriggs (2.31).
• Adding to LBSU's hot hitting is freshman Allison Martinez. Martinez has been consistent offensively as she owns a league-leading .364 attack percentage (67-16-140). Joining Martinez in the top 10 is Xue who is fourth in the conference with a .351 attack percentage.
Carly Aigner-Swesey and Mina Andjelkovic have settled into splitting time at setter this season. Aigner-Swesey is averaging 8.15 assists per set, while Andjelkovic owns a 4.65 clip.

Scouting the Gauchos
• UC Santa Barbara owns a 10-5 overall record and opened Big West Conference play last week with a 2-1 record. 
• The Gauchos have won four of their last five matches with their lone loss coming against UC Irvine (3-1).
• UCSB bounced back from its loss versus the Anteaters and picked up a pair of road wins at UC Riverside (3-1) and at Cal State Fullerton (3-0).
• Lindsey Ruddins leads the offensive charge as she averages a league-leading 5.54 kills per set. Ruddins also contributes 3.02 digs per set, 0.56 blocks per set, and 0.39 aces per set.
• Olivia Lovenberg is the team's setter as she averages 11.39 assists per set to help the Gauchos to a .251 hitting percentage.
• Emilia Petrachi leads the defense with 4.53 digs per set, while Rowan Ennis (0.74 blocks per set) Charlie Robinson (0.71 blocks per set) set the tone at the net. 

Series vs. UC Santa Barbara
In a series that dates back to 1965, Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara will face off for the 108th time in program history. Overall, the Beach lead the all-time series 70-37. UCSB won the most recent meeting in four sets, however, LBSU had won the previous 12 meetings. 

Scouting the Mustangs
• Cal Poly sits atop the Big West Conference standings with a 13-1 overall record and a 3-0 league mark.
• The Mustangs are on a 12-match winning streak and their lone loss of the year came at then-No. 20 Pitt, 3-1. 
• Cal Poly opened Big West action last week and swept UC Davis at home, before winning in straight sets at Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside.
• The Mustangs are led by the Van Winden sisters as Torrey averages 4.88 kills per set, while Adlee averages 2.98. 
• Avalon Denecochea is the team's setter as she as accumulated 494 assists for an average of 10.08 per set.
• Katherine Brouker paces the backrow with 4.22 digs per set, while Madilyn Mercer guards the net with 1.02 blocks per set.

Series vs. Cal Poly
Long Beach State and Cal Poly will face off for the 67th time in program history and the Beach lead the all-time series 45-21. However, the Mustangs swept the series against the Beach a year ago as Long Beach State looks to get back on the winning track against Cal Poly.

Leader of the Pack
Long Beach State has been solid on blocking defense this season as the Beach have posted 143.5 blocks this season for an average of 2.39 blocks per set. LBSU's blocks per set average is tops in the Big West Conference as the Beach have posted 34 blocks more than anyone else in the league.

1-2 Punch
With the Beach leading the league in blocks per set, it comes as no surprise that Long Beach State's Emma Kirst and YiZhi Xue own the two top statistical spots in blocks per set in the Big West. Kirst leads the way with 1.08 blocks per set, while Xue is hot on her heels with 1.07 blocks per set.

Hot Hitting
Not only does freshman Allison Martinez lead Long Beach State in hitting, she also leads the Big West Conference with an attack percentage of .364. In 15 matches so far, Martinez has knocked down 67 kills on 140 swings while committing just 16 attack errors. 

Up Next
Following the two road matches this week, Long Beach State will return home to the Walter Pyramid to host UC Irvine and UC Davis. The Beach will host the Anteaters on Friday, October 5 at 7 p.m., before welcoming the Aggies on Saturday, October 6 at 7 p.m. The contest against UC Davis will be broadcast on ESPN3.
