Tennis Finishes A Strong Opening Day

Long Beach State sends six singles players into their flight semifinals in Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Long Beach State kicked off the tournament season Friday at the UNLV Invitational, and had six singles advance through quarterfinal action, including junior Natalia Munoz and freshman Zara Lennon, who both advanced to the semifinals in the top flight.
 
                Lennon debuted impressively, picking up a 6-4, 6-1 win over Mathilda Vidgren of San Jose State, while Natalia Munoz was leading Ghita Nassi of Southern Utah when Nassik retired, moving the junior forward in the competition. In different sides of the bracket, Munoz will now face Chiara Tomasetti of Northern Arizona while Lennon will have a tough test facing No. 49 Aiwen Zhu of the hosts.
 
                In the second flight, Sadaf Sadeghvaziri played to a convincing 6-3, 6-0 win over Savannah Sendar of San Jose State, while freshman Dominique Meyer fell to Izumi Asano of UNLV. The Beach had a split in the third flight of singles as well, as freshman Emma Bardet fell 6-3, 6-4 to Madi Moore of NAU in her LBSU debut. Meanwhile, Lalita Devarakonda outlasted Miyo Kobayashi of San Jose Statein the closest match of singles in Las Vegas Friday, winning 6-7, 6-4, 7-6.
 
                Freshman Wiktoria Rutkowska also debuted with a win, dropping Jessica Stefan of Southern Utah 6-0, 6-3 in flight four, and sophomore Carlota Casasampere had a bye into the semifinals in flight five.
 
                In doubles, Munoz stayed unbeaten on the day with a top flight win over San Jose State's Culibrk/Vidgren with Meyer, winning 8-4. In flight two Sadeghvaziri and Bardet advanced in a shortened 6-3 match against NAU, and Casasampere and Rutkowska also advanced with an 8-6 win over Granville/Moore of NAU.
 
                Action at the tournament continues through Sunday, with the semifinals in both the main and consolation draws to be played tomorrow beginning at 10 a.m.
