Long Beach State Falls On the Road At No. 3 USC

9/14/2018 3:29:00 PM | Women's Soccer

The Beach returns to action Monday at BYU.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Long Beach State battled but could not find the net on the way to a 3-0 loss on the road at No. 3 USC Friday afternoon.

Long Beach State (4-4-0) still has not lost to a team outside of the current Top 15 this season.

Senior Imani McDonald made two early saves for Long Beach State against No. 3 USC (7-0-1) as the teams settled in to the game. The Beach earned a dangerous free kick in the 16th minute just prior to the first half water break, necessitated by the 90-degree plus temperatures Friday afternoon at McAlister Field.

After the break, a substitution for USC gave the Trojans the breakthrough, as Alea Hyatt found some room on the right side of the box, finding an angle to get past McDonald and give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.

The Beach pushed forward late in the half, with Rola Badawiya getting a takeaway in an advanced position leading to a counter and a shot, while Dana Fujikuni drew a foul near the endline, but the Trojans were able to handle both defensively and get to the break with the lead.

A counter for the Trojans in the 56th minute led  to a second goal for USC, as Leah Pruitt had the final touch to make the score 2-0.

In the 63rd minute, Sierra Castles was able to find Ashley Gonzales on a counter for Long Beach State, but Kaylie Collins raced out from goal to take away the chance for the Beach, the best of the afternoon.

McDonald's sixth save of the game was a phenomenal one, a diving reaction save on a swerving shot from Natalie Jacobs to keep the score even.  Hannah Pruitt headed home a final goal in the last minute as USC won the game 3-0.

Long Beach State will remain on the road for their next game, traveling to BYU to face the Cougars at 4:30 p.m. PT in Provo, Utah. The game will be streamed live on BYUtv.org.
