Long Beach State Pulls Even In Second Half But Falls 2-1 at No. 23 Texas

8/30/2018 8:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Ashley Gonzales scored her second goal of the season in the loss.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State pulled even in the 50th minute on the second goal of the season from senior Ashley Gonzales, but No. 23 Texas had an answer and came away with a 2-1 win over the Beach.

The game was a tight one throughout, with both shots and corner kicks even for both teams at 11 and 4 respectively, while shots on target ended in favor of Long Beach State (3-2-0) 5 to 3, but Nicole Curry would make four saves to pace the Longhorns to the victory.

Long Beach State (3-2-0) grabbed the first chance as Makayla Soll forced a save in the ninth minute, one of four shots on target in the first half from the Beach.

Texas (3-0-1) was able to answer against the run of play, as Cyera Hintzen was able to find just enough space to fire off a shot that found the side netting for the opening goal in the 19th minute.

Turning to their goal-scorer, Long Beach State had a solid chance from Gonzales turned away in the 31st minute, as Nicole Curry made another save.

Long Beach State would keep the pressure on in the second half, as Dana Fujikuni had the first shot on target in the second half, and then played a role in the goal coming in the 50th minute. Fujikuni's excellent cross was brought down by Nadiyah Siqueiros, and the ball eventually came free in front of Gonzales who put away her second goal of the season to tie the game.

Imani McDonald made a save to keep it even in the 62nd minute on another effort from Hintzen, but a long-range effort from the Longhorns hit the crossbar and took a fortunate bounce to Mackenzie MacFarland who put the Longhorns back on top less than a minute later.

Sierra Castles had an opportunity for the equalizer in the 69th minute, but was unable to connect first time and Texas was able to kill the game off and hold off LBSU the rest of the way.

Long Beach State will return home to play another ranked opponent this weekend, hosting No. 17 Auburn at 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 2 with a live stream provided by Beach Vision.
