Long Beach State went toe-to-toe with the Bruins but came up just short.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Long Beach State battled evenly with UCLA for just shy of 90 minutes, but a goal from Hailie Mace with just two seconds remaining gave the Bruins a 1-0 victory in the grand opening of Wallis Annenberg Stadium in Los Angeles.
The Long Beach State (0-1-0) defensive effort held No. 2 UCLA (1-0-0) at bay for nearly the entire contest, with the Beach coming away with the most shots in the opening half.
Senior Ashley Gonzales picked up her first shot of the year in the seventh minute, and then forced a diving save from Bruins goalkeeper Teagan Micah in the 22nd minute on an excellent counter.
UCLA got their first shot on target of the game in the first minute of the second half, but Long Beach State broke back and had their best chance of the game. Breaking on the counter, Gonzales found freshman Elysia Laramie behind the Bruin defense in the 52nd minute, but Micah came up with the save to keep the game scoreless.
The Bruins picked up the pressure in the second half, but Imani McDonald was up to the challenge finishing with seven saves, all in the second half, before the unsettling ending.
The game seemed destined to go into overtime, but Mace stole the win for the Bruins finding space in the closing seconds and scoring the winner with two seconds remaining.
The Beach returns to campus on Sunday, August 19 for the team's home opener at George Allen Field against SMU. Kickoff is scheduled for Noon, with a live stream available at www.longbeachstate.com.
