The sophomore’s first goal of the season was the difference in a 1-0 win.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – A volleyed finish from sophomore Nadiyah Siqueiros proved to be the difference in a crisp game between SMU and Long Beach State in the home opener for the Beach as LBSU came away with a 1-0 win.
With neither team finding the net in the first half, it was Long Beach State (1-1-0) that came back from the break with added pressure and finally nabbed the breakthrough in the 57th minute. Rola Badawiya streaked down the left side and sent in a cross that found an open Siqueiros, and the sophomore didn't miss, smashing home the first goal of the season for the 49ers on the half-volley.
SMU (1-1-0) had their best chance to even the score after drawing a penalty in the 76th minute, but Courtney Sebazco missed the kick well wide and the Beach stayed in the lead. Riding that momentum, the Beach would allow only one more shot over the final 15 minutes to continue on to the win.
SMU outshot the Beach in the first 45 seven to two, but only required Imani McDonald to make three comfortable saves as the senior collected her first shutout of the season, finishing the game with five saves.
Siqueiros was the most prolific forward on the day, with two other shots along with her goal while Sierra Castles and Badawiya each had two shots as well.
Long Beach State continues a three-game homestand on Friday, August 24, hosting Northeastern at 7 p.m. before welcoming San Diego State to George Allen Field on Sunday, August 26.
