Northridge, Calif. - John Broadhead leads the four Long Beach State competitors in the decathlon at the 2018 Big West Championships, ending day one in fourth place.

Broadhead finished no lower than eighth on the first day of competition, and took third in the long jump and the high jump. The junior crushed his previous best in the long jump, going foot further with a mark of 7.03 meters, and matched his career high in the high jump by clearing 2.02 meters.

A time of 51.38 in the 400 meter dash was also a PR for Broadhead, who had his career best marks in three of the five events on Friday.

Sophomore Devon Alvarado had top ten finishes in all five events, setting a PR in four events, throwing 11.30 meters in the shot put, clearing 1.84 meters in the high jump, jumping 6.57 meters in the long jump and finishing Friday with a 52.13 time in the 400.

Cole Hicks was lifted by a second-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 13.73 meters, the second-best of the season for the Beach. Hicks also set new season-highs in the high jump and long jump.

Jackson Potter rounded out the 49er competitors, one spot behind Alvarado and Hicks after finishing the first day in 12th place. Potter set new career highs in both the long jump and the 400, and had his best finish of the day in the high jump, taking fourth place after clearing 1.99 meters.

Day two of the decathlon will begin once again at Noon in Northridge. The day begins with the 110m hurdles and concludes with the 1500m run in the evening.
