Dirtbags Drop Rubber Match with UC Davis

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Thanks to a seven-run fourth inning, visiting UC Davis (15-23, 7-8 Big West) stormed to a series victory over Long Beach State (18-26, 4-8 Big West) with a 10-1 victory on Sunday afternoon on Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
The Dirtbags had 10 hits on the day, but scattered them around and scored just once in the eighth inning. LBSU stranded seven runners on base and hit into a pair of double plays. Redshirt senior Tristan Mercadel was 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, while Jarren Duran and Brooks Stotler were each 2-for-4 to record multi-hit games as well.
LBSU got its run thanks to a leadoff double into the left field corner by Clayton Andrews. He would later be brought home on an RBI infield single from Mercadel to put the Dirtbags on the board, but the game was already in UC Davis' control.
The Aggies hit three home runs on Sunday, including a three-run shot by Ryan Hooper to cap off a seven-run rally in the fourth.
Junior closer Chris Rivera made his first career start for the Dirtbags on Sunday, working 3.1 innings before fading in the fourth. He was the first of five pitchers used by the Dirtbags in the game, with Adam Seminaris working three full innings in relief allowing a run on two hits.
The attendance at this weekend's series was strong all three days, and resulted in a combined attendance of 7,772 on the weekend. That represents the third-best series attendance all-time for the Dirtbags, and it's less than 300 fans shy of the all-time record set in 1996.
Long Beach State will return to action next weekend for a three-game conference series at UC Riverside.
