LAST TIME OUT
• The Dirtbags were unable to keep the series win streak going, losing the final two games of a three-game set at Fresno State. LBSU had a historic offensive performance on Thursday, but ended up with just two hits in Saturday's rubber match.
• Redshirt sophomore Jacob Hughey was terrific at the plate, putting his name into the record books during Thursday's 24-10 win. Making just his fourth career start in the batting order, Hughey was 6-for-7 in the series opener with the Bulldogs, matching the school record for hits in a game set in 1998 by Jaron Madison. He also collected the first five RBIs of his career and became the first Dirtbag ever to score six runs in a game.
• In that historic win, every Dirtbags starter recorded a hit and scored two or home runs. Several players achieved career highs and Shaq Robinson hit his first home run as a Dirtbag.
• It was another good week at the plate for Clayton Andrews, who was the tough-luck loser in Saturday's finale. The junior lefty struck out a career-high 11 batters in 6.0 innings of work and allowed just two hits to the Bulldogs. Unfortunately, one was a solo home run and the other an RBI double in a 2-0 Long Beach loss.
SCOUTING THE AZTECS
• After moving up to No. 23 in the national rankings, the Aztecs slipped out of the polls following a home series loss against New Mexico. The Aztecs were able to salvage the final game of the series, 3-2, then picked up a victory on Monday against Washington, 6-4, to enter Tuesday's game with back-to-back victories.
• Sophomore CF Julian Escobedo leads the team with a .357 average and 24 runs scored. Junior 1B Jordan Verdon leads the team with 15 doubles and also has a team-best 30 RBIs. Chad Bible has five homers to lead the Aztecs and Chase Calabuig (.342, 3 HR, 26 RBIs) is coming off a three-hit performance against Washington on Monday.
• These teams met exactly one week ago, with San Diego State earning a 5-1 win at Blair Field. Justin Goossen-Brown started that game in Long Beach, and was also Monday's starter for the Aztecs, meaning LBSU will get a look at weekend starter Harrison Pyatt on Tuesday. The junior lasted just 1.2 innings in his previous start, issuing four walks and hitting two batters in a 9-5 loss to New Mexico. In SDSU's win over the Dirtbags, catcher Dean Nevarez drove in a pair of runs and Escobedo had three RBIs to lead SDSU to the victory.
BOHL DIAMOND AT BLAIR FIELD
• Long Beach State received a multi-million dollar donation during the offseason from longtime supporter Marilyn Bohl. In recognition of her generous gift, , the Dirtbags' home field has been renamed Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
• Bohl has been actively involved in supporting the Blair Field renovation project for years, and previously gave a one million dollar gift to help kick off the initial phase of the renovations prior to the 2016 season.
• So far, the renovation efforts have included a new outfield fence, the Troy & Danyll Tulowitzki Batting Facility, the Jered Weaver Bullpen, and improvements to the Dirtbags locker room. Future plans include new stadium lighting, improved field drainage, a new multi-purpose team room along the left field line, plus restroom and seating upgrades.
LB IN MLB
• For the eighth consecutive year, Long Beach State had more players in the major leagues than any other college or university. There were 15 former Dirtbags who played in the major leagues in 2017 and the all-time total for Long Beach State is 48 big league representatives.
• There were two former Dirtbags who made their MLB debuts in 2017. First, it was RHP Shane Carle who appeared for the Colorado Rockies on April 14. Later in the season, C Mike Marjama made his debut with the Seattle Mariners on September 3.
• Former Kansas City Royals lefthander Jason Vargas made his first All-Star Game appearance during the 2017 season. The Dirtbags will be giving away commemorative Vargas bobbleheads prior at the UC Irvine game on April 7.
